The North Carolina Tar Heels prepare for the 2025-26 NCAA season in which they will try to improve the 23-14 (13-7 in the conference) record they posted last year. After a 71-64 loss to Ole Miss in the South Region first round, the Tar Heels are eager to bounce back with coach Hubert Davis leading the way.
They finished with the sixth-best record in the ACC last campaign, behind archrivals Duke (19-1), Clemson (18-2), Louisville (18-2), SMU (13-7) and Wake Forest (13-7), respectively.
North Carolina went out of its way and landed multiple players from the transfer portal, high school recruiting, and even from abroad. While they don’t look as strong as the Blue Devils, the Tar Heels are aiming high this campaign.
Analyst says North Carolina isn’t good enough to compete for a title
College basketball analyst Randolph Childress shared his point of view on North Carolina’s chances to thrive this campaign. Talking with Jon Rothstein in the Field of 68 After Dark Podcast, he admitted that the Tar Heels were good, but they aren’t great just yet.

“I think that’s good enough to say, okay, not great, but it’s good enough. It’s not great,” Childress said on Friday. “Like all of this is put ‘They’re like everyone else. We had to revamp it.’ They’re like Virginia.”
Childress has solid expectations for North Carolina, but they don’t seem to be a legitimate title candidate at this point. If they continue in this trajectory, the picture could look different next year.
