The<a href="http://bolavip.com/en/college-basketball" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> college basketball</a> season hasn’t even started yet, but we can already start making our predictions and firing hot takes. That’s what pre-season team and player rankings are for.



According to most scouts, BYU will have the best player in the nation in AJ Dybantsa, and after watching him dominate for Team USA this offseason, they might be right.



With that in mind, CBS Sports analyst Garry Parrish placed him at the top of his way-too-early 2026 NBA Draft, with the Washington Wizards as his projected destination.

“Dybantsa has been an obvious contender to be the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft for years — and I’m putting him in the top spot despite the New England native having something less than an encouraging final season of high school basketball at Utah Prep,” wrote Parrish. “The 6-9 wing is a dynamic shot-creator and shot-maker who has the look of a future scoring champ. He’ll have scouts on BYU’s campus all season.”

Needless to say, countless things could affect his draft stock. Injuries, a subpar campaign, or even issues off the court could have a big toll on whether he’s taken first or not.



Nevertheless, judging by his work ethic, talent, and recent performances in international competition, it’s hard to envision anybody taking his projected spot in the NBA Draft.

Jon Scheyer and the Duke Blue Devils couldn’t finish the job last season. Despite being considered the best team in <a href="http://bolavip.com/en/college-basketball" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">college basketball</a> and having the best player in the nation, they still fell short.



It feels like they could’ve achieved great things had Cooper Flagg chosen to stay in college. Even so, while his time on campus was short-lived, it was still significant.



However, now that he’s gone to the Dallas Mavericks, his former coach can finally take some friendly jabs at him, and that’s what he did in an appearance on Justin Robinson’s ‘The Brotherhood’ podcast.

“You know, and that’s, when we said we were gonna do this, I wasn’t thinking about getting questions from Cooper,” Scheyer responded. “The fact that he has a question […] I don’t know how amazing I wanna say it was, but, it was amazing beating him in a horse. Yeah. Every day after practice.”



Cooper Flagg might be the first-overall pick and about to become an NBA superstar, but it seems like Coach Scheyer will forever hold bragging rights over him.

Not so long ago, players had to sit out for a year after entering the <a href="http://bolavip.com/en/college-basketball" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">college basketball</a> transfer portal. Of course, that wasn’t fair, but it made them think twice before making that decision.



Now, with the lack of playing time, all the players moving around, and the NIL era, players are basically entering free agency in every offseason with the new transfer portal rules.



That’s not positive for their development, says coach John Calipari. Talking to Penny Hardaway on his podcast, the Arkansas coach questioned today’s players’ approach to the portal.

“Forget about the money, how we pay a kid. It doesn’t matter,” Calipari said. “But this transfer portal. The first sign of trouble, they leave. How do you transfer four times and then graduate? We’re still educational institutions. They have to get it in control.”

Of course, it’s not that the players have to go through adversity to thrive, but it also shapes their character. Instead of fighting and competing, they can just bail and move somewhere else.



One could argue that the most talented players will still find their way to the court, but sometimes, it takes much more than just talent to make it as a professional athlete.

It’s crazy to think how some moments wind up defining a person’s life. People rarely know when they’re going through a life-changing experience until they have some time to reflect on that.



That was the case with Duke coach Jon Scheyer. In a recent interview, he acknowledged that getting to know Cooper Flagg was actually a defining moment in his life.



He talked about how former NBA player Brian Scalabrine caught wind of Flagg’s talent and reached out to Scheyer to let him know about the high school phenom. The rest is history.

Unfortunately, Flagg and the Blue Devils couldn’t go the distance and finish the job by winning a national championship, but he had one of the best individual seasons in<a href="http://bolavip.com/en/college-basketball" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> college basketball</a> history.



Now, he’s taken his talents to the pros to play for the Dallas Mavericks, and while his days at Durham were short-lived, they clearly made a long-lasting impact on his coach.

Of course, programs had been illegally paying athletes to play for them for decades, but that open secret has now become the new rule. Of course, that has its detractors.



Recruits now have all the leverage, and while that might be fair to a degree, Memphis coach Penny Hardaway believes there’s just no way to know whether they’re bluffing or not.

“I would rather be transparent,” Hardaway said on his podcast. “We’ve got to get some guardrails at some point, because you don’t know what – guys have told me, ‘Well, such and such is going to give me $2 (million), what are you going to do?’ I don’t know if that’s true or not.”

The tables have turned, and while it’s fair that the players can finally be legally compensated for their efforts and talents, Hardaway believes there should be a way to know for sure how much money is being thrown around.



At the end of the day, this was a long time coming, and it will take an adjustment period before the NCAA can make the necessary adjustments. This is a new era, and this is just how it goes.

The Los Angeles Lakers made a bold move in the second round of the 2025 NBA Draft. It’s not so usual to see a team trade up 20 spots, which is why they did to get Adou Thiero.



It’s even less usual when that kind of move could have some serious financial implications for the Lakers, as it put them closer to the infamous second apron of the luxury tax threshold.



However, John Calipari, who coached Thiero in college, believes that was the right move. When asked about his pupil, Calipari claimed that he should’ve been taken in the first round.

Some scouts had the Razorbacks’ forward going in the first round, so it was rather surprising to see him slip so much. He’s strong, physical, and has great defensive instincts.



The Lakers have one of the best player development staffs in the game, so even though it might be a while before he makes an impact, he could end up being one of the steals of the draft.

For the second consecutive offseason, Dan Hurley was tied to an NBA coaching vacancy. This time, however, he was quick to dismiss that narrative and let everybody know that he wasn’t interested.



Whether he was actually a candidate to replace Tom Thibodeau and take the reins of the New York Knicks is unclear, but Hurley wanted to make it loud and clear that he wanted to stay at UConn.



Of course, some fans and analysts may have taken this as a dig at the Knicks. Nevertheless, it didn’t have anything to do with them; he just doesn’t see himself as an NBA coach.

Hurley referred to himself as the best coach in <a href="http://bolavip.com/en/college-basketball" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">college basketball</a> last season, so that’s clearly a part of his identity. Also, he turned down the Los Angeles Lakers’ approach despite their very lucrative offer.



He’s building one of the most impressive coaching résumés in college basketball history. The lights might be brighter somewhere else, but Hurley knows that the grass isn’t always greener.

Unfortunately, her stellar campaign was cut short early in the postseason. She sustained a season-ending ACL injury in the NCAA Tournament, thus ending her team’s hopes.



But as tough as these days have been for the young guard, Watkins recently admitted that multiple colleagues who had been through the same thing, such as Paige Bueckers, reached out to her to share her wishes and insight on her recovery.

ACL injuries are usual in basketball, and while it’s terrible, it’s just another part of the game. Hopefully, it won’t take a toll on Watkins’ game, and she’ll return to her previous level.

Brigham Young University star AJ Dybantsa is already turning heads with his basketball abilities. The small forward was one of the most sought-after high school prospects this year, receiving interest and visiting iconic programs such as Alabama, North Carolina and Kansas, among others, before committing to BYU in October.



Before he played with the Cougars, Dybantsa was invited to participate in the 2025 USA Men’s U19 National Team training camp, where he excelled and was named to the team after just seven days of training camp in Colorado Springs.

With Dybantsa, four-star recruit Xavion Staton, and four-star Chamberlain Burgess, the Cougars have ambitious plans for the 2024-25 season. So much so that the forward said it was championship or bust for his squad.

Ride the wave.’ And we rode the wave with him all the way to the Super Bowl.”

Hurts has had to deal with some harsh criticism throughout the course of the years, but now that he’s a Super Bowl champion, there won’t be a single person in Philadelphia showing him love.

He then continued to gush about the Huskies’ backcourt, adding that they had enough size, depth, and experience to be a force to be reckoned with next season:



“I’m talking the entire backcourt—not just Solo and Silas, not just Malachi and Silas—but when you add Braylon Mullins, when you add Alec Millender, when you add Jacob Furphy, who’s listed as a guard for this UConn team: size, depth, experience, speed, power, All-Americans,” he continued. “You know, Mr. Indiana Basketball in Braylon Mullins, who’s going to be the next one-and-done for this talented UConn squad. So we’re going to get into that and break out this new core four, if you will, with the new additions to this UConn team.”

It takes a whole lot to win at the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/college-basketball" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">college basketball</a> level. Coaches also have to recruit players and make sure that every single thing marches accordingly within the program.



Needless to say, that doesn’t leave a lot of time on the table for them to focus on the lesser things. That’s why they inevitably have to prioritize and pick their own battles.



With that in mind, Kentucky coach Mark Pope admitted that he doesn’t even bother trying to fix a player’s shooting mechanics. If it’s not a matter of reps, he won’t even bother recruiting him.

“I will touch a guy who is a really good player and has got solid mechanics but is not making shots yet. Because I can rep that guy out,” Pope told Certified Kentucky. “So in terms of shooting, I spend zero time coaching mechanics, maybe little tiny tweaks, some balance stuff or some rhythm stuff, but I am just not a good enough coach. So that puts it on you guys, and I do not think that is completely universal at the college level, but I think it is pretty common.”

Of course, this is quite a controversial and unpopular opinion, as we’ve seen players with broken mechanics thrive in the pros. Some don’t even need to fix those shots, like Shawn Marion.

But at the end of the day, every coach has their ways and beliefs, and if Coach Pope doesn’t feel like he needs to spend time fixing what he feels cannot be fixed, so be it.

Cameron Boozer is set to start his collegiate career after spending four years in Columbus (Miami). The twin, son of Duke legend Carlos Boozer, will follow in his father’s steps and play for the Blue Devils in college.



Like many other prospects, Boozer is in the gym, preparing for his freshman season. As a five-star recruit and ranked the No. 3 player in the country, he’s one of the most anticipated rookies of the 2024-25 NCAA basketball season.



Boozer showed off his passing, rebounding and even ball-handling skills during his high school years, but there is something he needs to work on before taking his game to new heights, especially in the NBA. The 17-year-old forward finished his high school career as a 43% 3-point shooter, but he’s not stopping there.

Cameron Boozer and his twin brother, Cayden, will join Jon Scheyer’s team, hoping to make a strong impact and take Duke back to the top of<a href="https://bolavip.com/en/college-basketball" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> college basketball</a> following a Final Four exit against the Houston Cougars in March.



They joined a team with a series of efficient shooters such as Dame Sarr, Darren Harris, and Isaiah Evans, but he will most likely be asked to carry the bulk of the load on offense.
