NCAAF News: Deion Sanders’ Colorado gets little love from AP Top 25 Poll following departure of sons Shedeur and Shilo

As Deion Sanders gears up for a crucial NCAA season without his sons Shedeur Sanders and Shilo Sanders, the Colorado Buffaloes weren't exactly a top choice in the AP Top 25 Poll.

The Colorado Buffaloes are taking on a much different personality as the 2025 NCAA season looms closer. After Shedeur Sanders and Shilo Sanders left college football for the NFL, Deion Sanders and the Buffs have taken a backseat in terms of public exposure. That might be put in evidence by the amount of votes the team earned in the Preseason AP Poll.

The Buffaloes’ ending to the 2024 college football season was boundary catastrophic. After a strong year, the Buffs fell short of the Big 12 Championship Game. To add insult to injury, Colorado was exposed by the BYU Cougars in the Valero Alamo Bowl.

Needless to say, it wasn’t the ending to their college football careers that Shedeur and Shilo dreamed of—nor the one Deion hoped for his sons, and most importantly, his players.

Regardless, the school in Boulder is heading into the upcoming NCAA season with redemption in mind. After the preseason AP Poll was announced, Coach Prime and the Buffaloes might have added another pin to their bulletin board.

How many votes did the Buffs earn?

Despite a concerning finish, Colorado put on quite a show during the past season. However, it apparently isn’t enough to overlook the key absences of Shedeur and Travis Hunter in the offense.

The Buffaloes didn’t make the cut for the AP Top 25 Poll, and in fact received only one vote to make the list. If Deion and company needed another chip on their shoulders, the ranking might have provided just that.

Two QBs for one starting job

Sanders and the coaching staff in Boulder have yet to announce who will be the starting quarterback for the Buffaloes when the season starts. As it stands, true-freshman Julian Lewis is battling with transfer senior Kaidon Salter to get the nod from Primetime and command the huddle.

“Both these guys can play,” Sanders commented on the QB battle, via Associated Press. “We can play well with either one of them. It’s not like they’re enemies. They’re dear friends, and they’re trying to make each other better.”

There’s still time for the Buffaloes to make their decisions, and changes or tweaks could come as the year progresses. Colorado will kickstart the 2025 college football campaign against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets on August 29 at Folsom Field.
