Pete Alonso and the New York Mets took the field twice on Sunday in a doubleheader against the St. Louis Cardinals. Now sitting at 22-13 in the MLB regular season, the Mets are facing mounting injury concerns—an issue head coach Carlos Mendoza addressed after the games with a troubling update on two of Alonso’s key teammates.
Over the weekend, Mendoza confirmed that two critical players, also close to Francisco Lindor, were placed on the injured list. Following Sunday’s doubleheader, the situation appears to have worsened. The physical toll of playing two games in one day may have contributed to the latest injuries, which are causing concern among fans and staff alike.
The Mets were originally scheduled to play on Saturday, but the game was postponed due to weather conditions. As a result, the team had to play both games on Sunday, narrowly losing both matchups to the Cardinals by just one run each.
After the second game, Mendoza addressed reporters and provided an update on the injuries to Jesse Winker and Brett Baty. “He [Baty] was dealing with soreness in his right big toe. I was told he was going to complete his workouts yesterday and today, but we’ll have to check on that,” Mendoza explained.

Jesse Winker #3 of the New York Mets hits a single.
As for Winker, Mendoza hinted that a stint on the injured list may be imminent. “He’s going back to New York. We need to get more eyes on it. They weren’t clear here, but it looks like an IL situation,” he said following the loss.

Mendoza reacts after back-to-back losses to the Cardinals
Dealing with a wave of injuries, Mendoza also pointed to a “lack of luck” after two narrow losses to the St. Louis Cardinals. Each game was decided by a single run, and Mendoza expressed hope for a stronger showing as the team prepares to face the Arizona Diamondbacks later this week.
“That’s how baseball goes sometimes. It can be frustrating, but there’s nothing you can do about it,” Mendoza told reporters. “We’ve got to keep doing what we’re supposed to—controlling the strike zone and hitting the ball hard. We want to win series and games, but now it’s time to turn the page.”
Jesse Winker shares honest reaction to injury concerns
Teammate Jesse Winker opened up about the frustration of dealing with uncertainty around his potential injury. Winker, who has also faced his own setbacks, admitted that not being able to play takes an emotional toll.
“I’m going to wait and see what happened because I don’t have an answer yet,” Winker said after experiencing discomfort following a throw in the third inning against the Cardinals. “But anytime you’re not playing, it sucks.”
