As the MLB Trade Deadline nears, the Philadelphia Phillies and New York Mets have reportedly adopted a ā€œvery aggressiveā€ stance, with major roster upgrades in sight. ESPN’s Jeff Passan reported Wednesday that both clubs could be central players ahead of Thursday’s deadline.

One name rising on both radars: Ryan Helsley, the dominant closer from the St. Louis Cardinals, who could be a difference-maker in a pennant race.

The Mets and Phillies are not alone in the hunt, but their urgency is making headlines — and their targets reflect a push for both short-term impact and postseason aspirations.

Helsley drawing heavy interest

According to The Athletic’s Tim Britton and Will Sammon, the Mets have shown ā€œsome interestā€ in Helsley, particularly as they evaluate options to support a five-man rotation through August. With a packed schedule, bullpen depth has become a top priority.

The Phillies, meanwhile, are on a similar path. As Matt Gelb of The Athletic reported, Philadelphia is focused on landing a ā€œhigher-end bullpen additionā€ before the clock runs out.

Bidding war brewing

Both teams will have to outmaneuver several contenders if they hope to land Helsley. The Mets, led by baseball operations president David Stearns, have also expressed interest in starting pitchers who could ā€œraise the ceilingā€ of the roster. One name that’s surfaced: Sandy Alcantara of the Miami Marlins.

Alcantara a risky option

According to Mike Puma of the New York Post, the Mets has already ā€œchecked inā€ on Alcantara, despite his rough 2025 campaign. The former Cy Young winner is posting a 6.66 ERA after returning from Tommy John surgery.
