AL West team reportedly in the lead for Diamondbacks’ Eugenio Suarez amid MLB trade deadline drama

As the MLB Trade Deadline approaches, an AL West team have emerged as front-runners to acquire Arizona Diamondbacks’ third baseman Eugenio Suarez, heightening the drama around one of the season’s hottest trade targets.

Arizona Diamondbacks third baseman Eugenio Suarez has quickly become one of the most talked-about names ahead of the MLB Trade Deadline, and according to a new report, one American League contender has taken the lead in the race to acquire him.

While multiple teams have inquired about Suarez’s availability, the Seattle Mariners are now viewed as the frontrunner to land the veteran slugger — if the Diamondbacks ultimately decide to move him. With the AL West title within reach, Seattle is exploring bold upgrades to fuel a potential postseason run.

According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, Seattle has the prospect of capital to make a deal happen, but the decision comes down to whether they are willing to part with top-tier talent. “The Mariners are the deadline wild card, though. They’ve got a cadre of top 100-caliber prospects — eight in all — and the question they’ll ask themselves is: Are we comfortable moving someone like Harry Ford for a rental like Suárez? To this point, the answer has been no,” Passan wrote.

He added: “But weird things happen in the final 40 hours before a deadline. And a team really going for it — the Mariners want a bullpen arm, too — is far from the worst thing, particularly when said team has never even made the World Series.”

Despite Arizona’s reluctance to move Suarez so far, Seattle remains in close pursuit. The New York Yankees were previously in aggressive talks for Suarez, but the Diamondbacks’ asking price led them to pivot toward a trade with the Colorado Rockies for Ryan McMahon instead.

The Mariners, currently 57-51 and sitting second in the AL West behind the Houston Astros, are looking for a final boost as they aim for their first-ever World Series appearance.

The lineup already features one of the league’s most productive power hitters: Cal Raleigh, who leads all of MLB with 41 home runs. Adding Suárez, who has 36 homers this season, would give Seattle an imposing middle-of-the-order tandem as the playoff race heats up.

Seattle ranks fifth in MLB in home runs (149) and 10th in RBIs (470), numbers that could rise further if Suárez joins the roster. His veteran presence and consistent slugging would provide both depth and playoff experience.

Mariners already making moves

Seattle has not waited for the final hours to act. Earlier this week, the team acquired infielder Josh Naylor from the Diamondbacks. Naylor, batting .291 with 12 home runs and 60 RBIs this season, has already made an immediate impact, homering in his Mariners debut.
