Cam Smith, one of the Houston Astros’ brightest young talents, has been putting in impressive work during spring training in hopes of earning a coveted spot on Joe Espada’s final roster for the 2025 MLB season.
In recent statements, Smith didn’t shy away from sending a clear message likely aimed at the Astros’ front office: “I’m confident and I’m ready,” he said, expressing his desire to play this upcoming season and finally make his major league debut with the team.
While Joe Espada has yet to make anything official, Smith acknowledges that the ultimate decision lies with the manager. “That’s really all I can say. I don’t make the decision but I feel personally that I am ready. At the end of the day whatever happens, it’s the right choice,” Smith stated.
It’s worth remembering that less than a week ago, Espada admitted that Smith has been working hard, saying, “He’s put himself in a really good position, and we’ll continue to evaluate him.” Those comments from the manager could be a positive sign for the young player.

Smith not only played well with the Astros during the MLB spring games, but it’s also clear that he has matured a lot as a player. He revealed that his focus has been sustained by saying, “I think having a connection with the man above, honestly that’s my main foundation, that’s what keeps me grounded.” The young player made this statement, referring to his faith.

Smith will have to wait for Espada’s final decision, but his teammates and other coaches have spoken highly of him. One of them was SS Jeremy Peña, who said, “He does look like a big leaguer to me.”
Dubon sees Smith as a future player capable of hitting 60 home runs per season, while the Astros’ utility man admitted that Smith has been the best player in Spring Training. “He’s the best player in this spring training camp that we got right now, numbers-wise. He’s the best performer.”
