Amid a difficult start to the 2025 MLB season — with just 12 wins and 26 losses, including a seven-game losing streak and 10 defeats in their last 11 contests — the Pittsburgh Pirates have made a major change in leadership. On Thursday, the organization officially announced the dismissal of manager Derek Shelton, signaling a clear effort to shift course and improve on-field performance.
The decision was accompanied by the immediate appointment of Don Kelly as the new manager. Previously serving as the team’s bench coach, Kelly’s promotion reflects a desire for continuity within the organization. His familiarity with the roster and internal culture could prove pivotal as the Pirates attempt to recover from their early-season slump.
General manager Ben Cherington issued a statement following the news, expressing both appreciation and a sense of necessity regarding Shelton’s departure. “Derek worked incredibly hard and sacrificed a lot over five-plus years,“ Cherington noted.
He added: “His family became a big part of the Pirates family, and we will miss that. He’s an incredibly smart, curious, and driven baseball leader. I believe he was the right person for the job when he was hired. I also believe that a change is now necessary. I wish Derek and his family all the best in their next chapter.“ These remarks reflect the respect Shelton earned during his tenure, even as the organization acknowledged that a new direction was needed.

Don Kelly takes the helm
Cherington also expressed strong confidence in the newly appointed manager. “I strongly believe that Donnie is the right person to manage the team right now,“ he stated. “He has the skills and experience needed to do this job really well and deeply cares about the Pirates and Pittsburgh. I look forward to working with him even more closely.”
