Despite their issues on the mound and some inconsistency at the plate, the New York Yankees are having a strong season, leading the AL East and watching Aaron Judge rank among the top 10 in multiple offensive categories. Still, the team appears to be in the market for more help.
According to a recent report from Bob Nightengale of USA Today, the Yankees are specifically looking to upgrade their infield with a bat that can provide power and ideally play third base — a position currently being covered by Oswald Peraza.
“The Yankees are aggressively searching for a right-handed bat, preferably a third baseman, while also looking for another starter,” Nightengale wrote in reference to what the Bronx Bombers could be targeting ahead of the MLB trade deadline.
Yankees eye more production
If the Yankees land the kind of right-handed bat Nightengale mentioned, it wouldn’t just take pressure off Judge and the team’s current offensive leaders — it would also help them maintain their standing as one of MLB’s top-hitting teams. The Yankees currently rank third in batting average across the league, hitting .263 as a team.
Peraza, who has taken over at third base following Oswaldo Cabrera’s season-ending ankle fracture, hasn’t been especially productive at the plate. He’s batting just .167 through 79 plate appearances, with 2 home runs, 12 hits, and 9 RBIs. Cabrera, before the injury, was hitting .243 with 26 hits.

Judge still leading the charge
Aaron Judge continues to carry the team offensively. With a 4.2 WAR so far, he’s on pace for a dominant second half if he stays consistent. Through 236 plate appearances, Judge is hitting .397 with 79 hits, 49 runs, and 18 home runs.
