The moment countless NBA players were waiting for has finally arrived: League commissioner Adam Silver recently announced that they won’t test for marijuana anymore, starting in the 2020/21 season.
Many former and current players have been advocating for marijuana use around the league for years. Some of them have even lost hundreds of thousands of dollars in fines for testing positive for marijuana.
Ben Dowsett was the first to break the news, claiming that“Continuing a theme from the Orlando bubble, the NBA will not test its players for marijuana for the upcoming 2020-21 season.” However, he did add that past offenders could still be tested.
Important clarification here, per source: The NBA’s random marijuana testing program will not run for 20-21, as reported below. However, testing FOR CAUSE – that is, past offenders or those who have given reasonable cause to suspect use – will continue. https://t.co/repVxFL2Ri

At the end of the day, you may or may not agree with cannabis use and that’s up to you. Whether that’s a positive change or not is not for us to decide, but we still must give the league their flowers for listening to their players.
Also, that doesn’t mean that players will show up high for training or games. But even if it does, then we can be sure that we’ll have millions of jokes and memes to laugh about for many years to come.
