After the Golden State Warriors’ early exit from the NBA playoffs, speculation began to swirl around the future of the player who stepped up in Stephen Curry’s absence. Both Curry and Draymond Green have since commented on the outlook for their young teammate.
Warriors fans were left disappointed after the team was eliminated by the Minnesota Timberwolves in a 4-1 first-round series. With Curry sidelined due to injury, Jonathan Kuminga took on a larger role, doing everything he could to help Golden State compete against Anthony Edwards and company.
Kuminga’s standout performances in the final stretch of the season earned him praise from fans. Now in his fourth year with the team, the 21-year-old has shown flashes of brilliance in high-stakes matchups. However, his future with the Warriors remains uncertain.
According to a report by The Athletic’s Anthony Slater and Marcus Thompson II, the Warriors and Kuminga are expected to explore sign-and-trade options this offseason. “A reunion between the sides is still on the table,” they wrote, citing league sources. “But both sides are expected to explore sign-and-trade scenarios.”

They added: “It would open up the market and theoretically give Kuminga the contract and fresh start he’d desire while bringing the Warriors back rotation players of immediate value.”

Speaking on the matter, Draymond Green acknowledged Kuminga’s impact during the postseason and wished him well, regardless of what the future holds. “Obviously JK has got the contract situation. I always wish him the best with that… whether it’s here or elsewhere, you just wish him the best,” Green told reporters after the series loss.
Curry also praised Kuminga for his perseverance and development throughout the season. “The fact that he’s had playing time and hadn’t, been in and out of the rotation, that’s tough for any player, let alone a young guy who’s trying to figure it out in the league. I commend him on just staying ready. That’s not easy to do,” he said.
“He’s grown a lot,” Curry added. “He’s been dealt a very tough hand, to be honest. He has handled his business in terms of just getting better and trying to focus on what it means to become a better version of himself.”
