NBA Rumors: Bulls could lose key player after sides reportedly remain far apart in the negotiations

The Chicago Bulls may be on the verge of losing a key contributor ahead of the 2025–26 NBA season, with reports indicating that contract negotiations with a key player have hit a major roadblock.

The Chicago Bulls are entering the upcoming NBA season with hopes of ending their playoff drought, which dates back to 2022 when they were eliminated in the first round by the Milwaukee Bucks. But their path back to postseason relevance could be in jeopardy, as contract negotiations with one key player have reportedly stalled.

Despite expectations of a roster overhaul, the Bulls have been relatively quiet this offseason. Their biggest moves so far include acquiring Isaac Okoro from the Cleveland Cavaliers in a trade involving Lonzo Ball and re-signing guard Tre Jones to a three-year deal. But now, they’re facing the possibility of losing Josh Giddey—a key piece in their rebuilding efforts.

According to NBA insider Jake Fischer, the two sides remain far apart in salary negotiations. “This time, Giddey’s representation has not wavered in its pursuit of a $30 million annual salary, sources say, while the Bulls’ offers have been much closer to $20 million,” Fischer reported. “The sides, sources say, remain far apart, with the Australian point guard long known to be seeking a deal that pays in the $30 million range annually”.

Giddey arrived in Chicago last season via a high-profile trade that sent defensive ace Alex Caruso to the Oklahoma City Thunder. The 22-year-old Australian quickly became a vital contributor to the Bulls’ lineup, demonstrating his value as the franchise looks to build a new core.

In his debut season with the Bulls, Giddey averaged 14.6 points, 8.1 rebounds, 7.2 assists, 1.2 steals, and 0.6 blocks per game while shooting 46.5% from the field, 37.8% from three, and 78.1% from the line—solid numbers that highlight his all-around impact.

However, contract talks appear to be hitting a wall due to the wide salary gap, and his absence from the Bulls’ first two Summer League games has only intensified speculation and rumors about a possible departure.

To complicate matters, Giddey’s unresolved future could be holding up other roster moves. According to Fischer, the Bulls have shown interest in Warriors forward Jonathan Kuminga, but ongoing negotiations with Giddey are reportedly preventing the team from moving forward with any potential deal.
