Last campaign, the San Francisco 49ers suffered a huge loss due to Christian McCaffrey’s recurring injuries. Now, head coach Kyle Shanahan has revealed whether the running back will be ready to play in the 2025 NFL season.
During the 2024 offseason, the 49ers were considered top contenders to win the Super Bowl. The NFC West club had a powerful offense, leading many to believe they had no real rivals in their pursuit of success.
Unfortunately, their biggest rival wasn’t another team. Injuries had a significant impact on the roster—especially with Christian McCaffrey being sidelined for several games. Losing their star running back certainly hurt their championship hopes.

During the 2024 campaign, Christian McCaffrey dealt with multiple injuries. Initially, he was reported to have an ankle sprain, but it was later revealed he was suffering from Achilles tendinitis in both legs.

This was clearly a worst-case scenario for the 49ers. The tendinitis stemmed from McCaffrey’s heavy workload, and without proper rest, he risked a serious Achilles rupture.
Although McCaffrey returned for the final stretch of the season, he sustained a PCL sprain in Week 13, which ultimately ended his year. According to DraftSharks, he has a 63.6% chance of injury this season—an alarmingly high figure the 49ers hope to mitigate.
Given his injury history, many fans questioned whether McCaffrey would be a reliable option for 2025. However, head coach Kyle Shanahan has confirmed that the running back is fully healthy and ready for the upcoming season.

“Christian is as ready as any player I’ve ever been around,” Kyle Shanahan told reporters on Thursday. “When he gets hurt, he’s got to rehab and get better. Right now, he’s healthy as can be.
“We’ve got to kind of protect him from himself, but Christian has a good idea of what he needs to do right now. He’s doing a lot less than he normally would do, but I know he is excited on how healthy he feels and the fact that he can get out there.”
Did Christian McCaffrey tear his Achilles?
