Chiefs draw clear request on Monday after message for Trey Smith amid contract talks

The Kansas City Chiefs and Trey Smith have yet to agree on a long-term contract extension, which is why the team's latest message for the guard sparked the same reaction from many fans.

The Kansas City Chiefs still have a situation to take care of ahead of the 2025 NFL season, with fifth-year guard Trey Smith seeking a long-term, lucrative contract extension at Arrowhead.

That’s why it wasn’t a surprise to see the organization meet with only one clear request from its fans in regard to the two-time Super Bowl champion. It all happened on social media on Monday.

With Smith turning 26 on June 16, the Chiefs made sure to make a post to wish him a happy birthday. “It’s your day, Trey. HBD!,” the caption read, prompting fans on X (formerly known as Twitter) to voice a special petition.

Smith’s current situation in Kansas City

With his rookie deal expiring this offseason, the Chiefs placed the franchise tag on Smith to at least secure his presence for another year. This moves guarantees the guard a $23.4 million salary for the 2025 NFL season.

It also gives Kansas City some time to hand him a long-term deal, having until July 15 at 4:00 PM ET to do so. Otherwise, Smith will become a free agent next year. Contract talks are still ongoing, but the player may have provided a promising signal.

Smith shows up at Chiefs minicamp

After missing the team’s voluntary workouts, Smith reported to the Chiefs’ first day of veteran mandatory minicamp on Tuesday. It’s important to note that he’d been subject to fines if he held out, but his presence on the practice field is still good news for the Chiefs. Only time will tell whether he gets a new deal as a late birthday gift.
