The Kansas City Chiefs still have a situation to take care of ahead of the 2025 NFL season, with fifth-year guard Trey Smith seeking a long-term, lucrative contract extension at Arrowhead.
Thatās why it wasnāt a surprise to see the organization meet with only one clear request from its fans in regard to the two-time Super Bowl champion. It all happened on social media on Monday.
With Smith turning 26 on June 16, the Chiefs made sure to make a post to wish him a happy birthday. āItās your day, Trey. HBD!,ā the caption read, prompting fans on X (formerly known as Twitter) to voice a special petition.

Chiefs Kingdom reminded the admin that they want to see Smith get a contract extension this offseason. āA big fat contract extension would be an awesome bday present,ā the @ArrowheadLive account replied.

āI hope Trey can get his new contract extension as a present,ā @WxAndMovies insisted. Another Chiefs fan went even further, dedicating special words to Smith and why he should get paid: āThe best birthday you can give Trey is a beautiful big contract. I hope this birthday gift comes true. We need Trey. He is one of a kind. Trey, I hope you have a wonderful birthday. I hope all your birthday wishes come true.ā
Smithās current situation in Kansas City
With his rookie deal expiring this offseason, the Chiefs placed the franchise tag on Smith to at least secure his presence for another year. This moves guarantees the guard a $23.4 million salary for the 2025 NFL season.
It also gives Kansas City some time to hand him a long-term deal, having until July 15 at 4:00 PM ET to do so. Otherwise, Smith will become a free agent next year. Contract talks are still ongoing, but the player may have provided a promising signal.
Smith shows up at Chiefs minicamp
After missing the teamās voluntary workouts, Smith reported to the Chiefsā first day of veteran mandatory minicamp on Tuesday. Itās important to note that heād been subject to fines if he held out, but his presence on the practice field is still good news for the Chiefs. Only time will tell whether he gets a new deal as a late birthday gift.
