Several months have passed since the Kansas City Chiefs last took the field in the NFL, with their Super Bowl loss to the Philadelphia Eagles marking an unexpected ending. Patrick Mahomes and his teammates could do little against a dominant opponent that left no room for doubt — and some have since spoken out about what they believe was the main reason for the defeat.
The New Orleans Saints made a strong addition this offseason by acquiring a key piece from the Chiefs. Justin Reid, who won the Vince Lombardi Trophy twice alongside Mahomes and company, was unable to repeat that success this past February.
The talented safety spoke with Ross Tucker on The Ross Tucker Podcast and shared his thoughts on the specific reasons why his team struggled to find its footing at any point in the game at Caesars Superdome.
“I think that the Eagles overall were just dominant,” Reid said. “They were just the more dominant team. I don’t think that we had our best day overall as a team. I think the Eagles being able to create pressure with the four-man rush and drop seven every time and cloud up all the zones and still create all that pressure on Patrick (Mahomes) was just really, really difficult.”

Jalen Hurts #1 of the Philadelphia Eagles tackles Justin Reid #20 of the Kansas City Chiefs in the second quarter during Super Bowl LIX at Caesars Superdome on February 09, 2025 in New Orleans, Louisiana.
He also added: “They came in firing, and they stepped on the gas early in the game, and they never took it off. You can only respect the team that puts up a performance as dominant as what they did. We just didn’t show up the way that we needed to that day.”

Will the Chiefs and Justin Reid cross paths again?
Justin Reid’s move to the New Orleans Saints represents a significant loss for Andy Reid’s team heading into next season. The veteran safety had been a key piece in recent years, playing a crucial role in helping the Chiefs win two Super Bowl rings.
The question many are now asking is: will the Chiefs and Saints face off this upcoming season? The answer is no. The way the schedule is set, the two teams won’t go head-to-head during the 18 weeks of the regular season.
This doesn’t rule out a potential showdown between Reid and his former team in a future Super Bowl — that is, if New Orleans can emerge as champions of the NFC, while Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs do the same in the AFC.
