Mike McCarthy couldn’t achieve his big goal of winning the Super Bowl with the Dallas Cowboys. Despite three years (2021-2023) with at least 12 regular-season wins, playoff failures put him on the hot seat in 2024.
With high expectations, injuries suddenly hit a roster that lacked the depth to sustain itself. Throughout last season, names like Dak Prescott, Micah Parsons, DaRon Bland, Brandin Cooks, and Trevon Diggs were all sidelined at some point. The team simply couldn’t overcome that.
For this reason, Jerry Jones did not extend McCarthy’s contract with the Cowboys, and one of the big uncertainties in the NFL is what will happen with the future of the head coach. It seems there is already a definitive answer.
What team is Mike McCarthy with now?
Mike McCarthy will not have a team for the 2025 NFL season. According to a report by Tom Pelissero, the head coach will not seek to be hired by the New Orleans Saints and prefers to wait for a more attractive opportunity in 2026.
“Former Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy has decided to focus on the 2026 hiring cycle and will not coach in the NFL this season, source tell me and Ian Rapoport. McCarthy, who has made the playoffs 12 times in 18 seasons, is expected to be a strong candidate a year from now.”
