The San Francisco 49ers need to prove their critics wrong in the 2025 NFL season. Unfortunately, they’re already facing a new setback, as GM John Lynch has revealed a worrying update on one of Brock Purdy’s key teammates.

Despite boasting a star-studded roster, the 49ers have failed to live up to expectations in recent years. Brock Purdy remains the leader of the offense, but that unit has undergone several changes this offseason.

Most notably, San Francisco lost Deebo Samuel, who joined the Washington Commanders. Now, another wide receiver may not be ready to take the field alongside Purdy in Week 1.

The 49ers have built one of the most talented rosters in the NFL, but injuries have consistently derailed their championship hopes.

Heading into the 2025 season, the team may not be at full strength for Week 1. Brock Purdy’s offense could be missing a crucial piece who hasn’t fully recovered from a significant injury suffered last year.

That player is Brandon Aiyuk. The wide receiver tore his ACL and MCL in 2024, and despite a lengthy recovery process, the team is not optimistic about his availability for the season opener against the Seattle Seahawks.

According to general manager John Lynch, expectations are low for Aiyuk to be cleared in time. The 49ers are prioritizing his long-term health and don’t want to risk a setback by rushing him back.

“There’s just steps that you have to continue to hit and I’ll continue to say that Brandon is doing well in his rehab,” GM John Lynch said. “Do we have an exact date right now? No. I don’t think it’ll be Week 1, but hopefully I’m surprised. We want him fully healthy. He had a significant injury, so you have to do a significant rehab.”
