The 2024 NFL season was a nightmare for Christian McCaffrey, as injuries sidelined him for multiple games. To avoid being caught off guard again, the San Francisco 49ers have put a backup plan in place by signing a veteran running back.
Since joining the 49ers in 2022, Christian McCaffrey has established himself as one of the premier running backs in the NFL. He impressed not only on the ground but also as a dynamic receiving threat out of the backfield.
After an outstanding 2023 season, expectations were sky-high for McCaffrey heading into 2024. Unfortunately, a series of injuries significantly limited his availability and effectiveness.

If not treated properly, the condition could lead to a serious tear. While rehab was part of the treatment, the primary solution was full rest—resulting in McCaffrey missing a significant portion of the season.
In his absence, rookie Isaac Guerendo stepped up as the primary running back. However, injuries also affected Guerendo, prompting the 49ers to strengthen their depth by adding a proven veteran to the roster.
According to Matt Zenitz of CBS Sports, the 49ers are finalizing a deal to sign Ameer Abdullah. The 32-year-old spent the 2024 season with the Las Vegas Raiders, rushing for 311 yards and scoring two touchdowns.

Abdullah brings more than just ground production—he’s also a capable receiving back, which fits perfectly with head coach Kyle Shanahan’s offensive system. Last season, he caught 40 passes for 261 yards and added three receiving touchdowns.

Due to McCaffrey’s injuries in 2024, the 49ers had to rely on five different running backs throughout the season. Guerendo took on the lead role, but he, too, battled injuries down the stretch.
