The Los Angeles Chargers continue working to surround quarterback Justin Herbert with talent to strengthen their offense for the upcoming NFL season. The 27 year-old quarterback, who signed a major contract in 2023, is considered the centerpiece of the team’s project under head coach Jim Harbaugh. In this case, a former New England Patriots player has joined the roster to reinforce the offense.
The coaching staff has emphasized the need to add depth at the wide receiver position following a 2024 season in which the team showed a solid offensive phase but lacked consistent playmakers after the departure of Mike Williams and the inconsistency of Quentin Johnston.
Within that context, the team’s recent moves highlight that the Chargers don’t want to lose momentum with the offense led by Herbert. With limited cap space amid the offseason, every new addition is crucial to keeping their starting quarterback well-supported without exceeding the salary ceiling.
Who is the new WR for the Chargers?
The new potential key weapon for Herbert and the Chargers is wide receiver JaQuae Jackson, who joins Los Angeles following a recent stint with the Patriots. The move was confirmed by the team’s official website, which continues to build around its franchise star, Herbert.

Jackson has yet to play in an official NFL game, so he’s viewed as a future-oriented addition. After completing a strong college career, he was signed as an undrafted free agent in 2024 by the Atlanta Falcons, but was waived before the start of the season. The Patriots claimed him off waivers, but a preseason injury placed him on IR for the entire campaign, and he was released in mid-2025.
