The New York Giants were linked to Aaron Rodgers ahead of the 2025 NFL season, but they ended up adding Russell Wilson to their quarterback room.

Aaron Rodgers has reportedly chosen the Pittsburgh Steelers as his team for the 2025 NFL season, with the Minnesota Vikings being the other potential option at this point of the offseason. But before the New York Giants signed Russell Wilson, staying in the Big Apple appeared to be another possibility for the 41-year-old.

A free agent after a two-year tenure with the New York Jets, the Giants looked like a real possibility for Rodgers as they searched for an experienced quarterback with a proven track record of success, following a disappointing experience with Daniel Jones.

Rodgers took his time to give an answer though, and while the Steelers look willing to wait as long as necessary for the four-time NFL MVP, the Giants weren’t so patient. Instead, they landed Wilson and Jameis Winston.

Even though he didn’t exactly reveal why they didn’t keep on waiting for Rodgers, Giants general manager Joe Schoen did provide a clear, seven-word statement on how the team feels after its free agency moves.

Rodgers’ timeline didn’t align with the Giants

Schoen didn’t want to talk specifically about Rodgers, but he faced multiple questions about the former Green Bay Packers star. However, he did suggest that A-Rod’s timeline didn’t meet the Giants’ plans.

All situations are different,” Schoen said. “Some people have different timelines in terms of when they want to do things. We were comfortable going that route [with Wilson and Winston].”

Schoen says Giants talked to Wilson for days before getting deal done

The Giants signed Wilson on March 25, but Schoen denied that it took so long because of Rodgers. According to the GM, the team had been in contract talks with the quarterback since his visit to its training facilities on March 14.

We were still looking at all options,” Wilson said. “We just felt comfortable with Russ, once we had him in the building, to get a contract done with him.”
