The possibility of Kirk Cousins joining the Pittsburgh Steelers for the 2025 NFL season has resurfaced recently, according to a report by NFL insider Tom Pelissero. Mike Tomlin and the rest of the organization have been waiting for a final decision from Aaron Rodgers, but the uncertainty surrounding his future has led the team to explore alternatives at the starting quarterback position. The Atlanta Falcons have now sent a signal that cannot be ignored.

Last year, Cousins signed a four-year, $180 million contract with the Falcons, but he was replaced by rookie Michael Penix Jr. in Week 16 of the season. Given the current situation, Atlanta is now ready to negotiate a trade for the 37-year-old veteran, who at the same time stands as the most solid option for the Steelers.

In case the Rodgers deal doesn’t go through, Pittsburgh views the draft as an opportunity to target a quarterback with star potential in the NFL. Still, understanding how complex the situation is, Tomlin’s team has turned its attention to Cousins and has received a last-minute update about Atlanta, which has now made its conditions clear.

Will Cousins join the Steelers?

“From talking to a number of different people, I don’t get the sense that the Falcons are displaying any level of urgency about making a move,” confirmed NFL insider Tom Pelissero on The Rich Eisen Show. The statement adds complexity to a negotiation that increasingly seems like a real possibility.

The no-trade clause that Cousins holds in Atlanta is another issue the Steelers and head coach Mike Tomlin need to consider. “I would not anticipate that Kirk Cousins would waive his no-trade clause to go anywhere until draft week, just to avoid a similar situation that he had a year ago,” added Pelissero.

What are the Falcons asking to trade Cousins?

Cousins’ salary is set at $27.5 million for this season, but there have been no attempts from Atlanta to renegotiate it for now. The Falcons are reportedly exploring trade options for their veteran quarterback and have requested a mid-round pick in any potential deal. Cousins, meanwhile, is looking to avoid a repeat of last year’s situation, when he was replaced by a rookie at his position.
