John Harbaugh’s New York Giants intend to strengthen their offensive line on a budget, which is why veteran Ryan Bates paid a visit on Monday.

The experienced center became a free agent after several seasons wearing the Chicago Bears uniform. He has appeared in 92 regular-season games with 21 starts, between Windy City and the Buffalo Bills.

The Bates-Giants connection has a common thread: during his time with Bills Mafia, Joe Schoen (current GM in New York) served as the Assistant General Manager of Buffalo.

Harbaugh’s position alternatives

The Giants‘ interior offensive line for 2026 centers on John Michael Schmitz Jr., who remains the undisputed starter after a solid developmental year. He is backed up by Bryan Hudson, a versatile depth piece who also provides value on special teams.

At right guard, the team has created a prove-it competition by re-signing veteran Aaron Stinnie and the former first-round pick Evan Neal, who is officially transitioning from tackle to guard under head coach John Harbaugh.

Bates’ final year in Chicago

In the 2025 season with the Chicago Bears, Ryan Bates served as a key versatile depth piece on the offensive line. Appearing in 16 regular-season games, he primarily contributed on special teams and provided interior insurance at both guard and center.

While he did not record a start during the regular season, he was active for both of the Bears’ postseason matchups, including their Wild Card victory over the Packers, finishing the year with one solo tackle recorded on special teams coverage.

Protecting Dart

The Giants are making it a top priority to protect Jaxson Dart as he enters his second season under new head coach John Harbaugh. After a rookie campaign where he was sacked 35 times in just 14 games, the front office is focused on stabilizing the offensive line to reduce the physical toll on their young franchise quarterback.
