The hockey world knows Connor McDavid’s free agency saga could redefine the landscape of the NHL. As his contract situation in Edmonton continues to draw silence, speculation about his future only grows louder.

One particularly bold prediction comes from former NHL defenseman Jay Rosehill, who believes there’s only one logical destination if McDavid decides to move on from the Edmonton Oilers: Auston Matthews‘ Toronto Maple Leafs.

“I have no idea where Connor McDavid’s head is at,” Rosehill said on Leafs Morning Take. “I think the chance of him leaving is small, but if he does leave, I think Toronto is the only destination he would go to.”

Why do Maple Leafs make sense for McDavid?

Toronto’s appeal isn’t just about hometown pride—it’s a marketing and hockey powerhouse. McDavid grew up a fan of the team, and stepping into the blue and white would instantly make him the most iconic player in franchise history. Financially, the opportunity is monumental. Endorsements, merchandise sales, and media attention would skyrocket with McDavid wearing a Maple Leafs sweater.
