Cameron Butler is no longer in the Blue Jackets’ plans. He’s now part of the Minnesota Wild following a trade that brought a nine-year NHL veteran back to Columbus.

The Columbus Blue Jackets have made a decision on Cameron Butler’s future — they’re moving on. The team traded Butler to the Minnesota Wild in exchange for Brendan Gaunce, who returns to Columbus after spending a season away, during which he appeared in just 12 games.

Butler is considered an elite prospect, offering significant potential at just 23 years old. He made his official NHL debut during the 2023-24 season but subsequently played in the AHL with the Cleveland Monsters, where he showed clear signs of improvement.

Meanwhile, the Blue Jackets appear to be seeking experience with Brendan Gaunce, who played with the team from 2021 to 2024. While he might provide some veteran presence, it’s worth noting that he appeared in only 59 games during that span, recording just 12 points (7 goals and 5 assists).

Blue Jackets Fans React Negatively to Trade

The decision to trade Butler has not gone over well with Blue Jackets fans. Many expressed frustration at moving a 23-year-old with significant future potential, believing the Wild are clearly getting the better end of the deal. Comments also surfaced from those unfamiliar with the “irrelevant” players acquired in return.

One angered fan posted on X, “Seriously? We’re in desperate need for a #1 DMAN and this is the move we make? What the absolute **** is wrong with you **** buying high on small forwards, get real. Honestly glad i didnt renew my season tickets as canceling them after this trade would be too much effort.”
