At just 21 years old, Luke Hughes has firmly established himself as the New Jersey Devils’ most dependable defenseman. After an impressive season with 44 points, his dedication both on and off the ice highlights why the organization is eager to secure his future with the team.

Negotiations between the Devils and Hughes are reportedly close to finalizing a long-term contract. Both sides seem aligned on a seven-year deal, with salary details remaining the primary sticking point. The goal is to have the extension signed before training camp begins.

As Sportsnet’s Luke Fox explained, the focus is on avoiding a short-term bridge contract. “There’s a desire on both sides for this one not to be a bridge, for it to be a long-term deal, maybe something in the 7-year range,” Fox said, emphasizing the mutual commitment.
