The Pittsburgh Penguins and their general manager Kyle Dubas have made a key decision that will surely impact the future of Sidney Crosby with the team. Despite many rumors, a report by Frank Seravalli indicates that they will not part ways easily with the core group of veterans surrounding their star.

Although three names may be on the trading block, only a spectacular offer would send them out the door. “Kyle Dubas has been asking for a ton for both Bryan Rust and Rickard Rakell. He’s still asking for a lot for Erik Karlsson on the basis he’s going to retain.”

Crosby is 37 years old, and since the Penguins haven’t made the playoffs in the last three seasons, several insiders have suggested that a trade could be possible. However, Sid wants to keep playing in the city as long as the team maintains a competitive roster to contend for the Stanley Cup.

Is Sidney Crosby a free agent?

Sidney Crosby is not a free agent. He is currently under contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins through the 2026–27 NHL season. Despite ongoing speculation about his future due to the team’s recent struggles, Crosby remains officially committed to the organization and cannot sign with another team unless he is traded or reaches the end of his deal.

At 37 years old, Crosby has repeatedly expressed his desire to finish his career in Pittsburgh, as long as the team remains competitive. His loyalty to the franchise and the city has played a major role in management’s decisions to keep the core group intact. That’s why the front office is focused on building a roster capable of contending, in part to honor Crosby’s expectations and leadership.

The problem is that if the Penguins have a very slow start to the 2025–26 season, Crosby’s desire to compete for a championship could open the door to a possible move at the trade deadline. Several teams would be waiting for that opportunity, and there have already been rumors that the Montreal Canadiens would be at the top of the list.
