The first great panic occurred in 1938, when the impending prospect of an invasion by Mussolini and the Nazis caused Ottorino Barassi, the Italian vice-president of FIFA at the time, to withdraw the Jules Rimet Trophy from an Italian bank and put it in a shoe box below his bed.
The first-ever robbery took place in London in 1966, just before the start of the 1966 World Cup. A dog called Pickles was responsible for discovering the trophy seven days after it went missing from a display case and was subsequently located in a garden hedge.
