Switzerland will play on their fifth consecutive World Cup (12th overall) and their best participation was in 1934, 1938 and 1954 when they reached the quarterfinals. In three of their last four appearances, the Swiss squad have surpassed the group stage. Switzerland shocked Europe when they won Group C of the UEFA qualifiers.
