Argentine soccer legend Diego Maradona received an emotional tribute during the match between Boca Juniors and Gimnasia at La Bombonera for the 2021 Argentine League on the day that would have been his 61st birthday. His daughter, Dalma, received a plaque with his jersey and was present. 

It’s been almost a year since Maradona passed away on November 25th, 2020 and, today, to honor one of the greatest players in soccer history at Boca stadium wore masks and wigs resembling his hairstyle. Maradona played for Boca Juniors, while Gimnasia was the last team he coached. Also, with balloons his iconic numer 10 jersey flew around the stadium. 

Also, the Argentine League and the Argentine Football Association declared that in every match of Matchday 19 at ten minute of each game, the referee will stop play and one minute of applause will begin.  

Tribute to Diego Maradona in La Bombonera

As Maradona is one of the biggest idols in Argentina, every stadium in the country paid tributes to the player that led the Albiceleste to the World Cup title in Mexico 86. However, everyone was expecting what the fans at La Bombonera would do, as El Pelusa had two runs with El Xeneize.

Fans didn't dissapoint. To honor their hero, there were chants, applause and flags in the stadium. It didn't matter that the stadium was only at the 50% of the capacity, due to the Covid-19 restrictions in Argentina, the love filled every corner of the place. Here, check out the videos.
