Barcelona: Lionel Messi to remain club captain for 2020-21 La Liga season

Barcelona are set to announce thatLionel Messi will continue wearing the captain armband even during the2020-2021 La Liga season.

Barcelona have once again appointed Lionel Messi as their captain for the upcoming 2020-21 La Liga season. Catalan newspaperMundo Deportivo claims that no changes will be made in the captains’ orderthis season.

The 33-year-old Argentine superstar will remain the first option for the captain’s armband. He is followed bySergio Busquets, Gerard Pique, and Sergio Roberto who will all act asvice-captains for the third season in a row.

Messi has been captaining his country since 2011 and Barca since 2018. After the exit of Andres Iniesta, Leo was awarded the chance to become his side’s leader.

Barcelonaare slowly starting to recover from their bad end of the 2019/20 season. First, they were trashed out of the Champions League by Bayern Munich (8-2), and then to make matters worse,Lionel Messi was on the verge ofleavingthe Spanish outfit this summer.

Messi made the headlines inSpain as well as in the entireworld in recent weeks. The six-time Ballon d’Or winner missed out on his club’s COVID-19 testing day and then he refused to show up at the pre-season training sessions.

At that point, the Blaugrana fans started organizing protests in-favor of their favorite player, asking the club not to sell him. In addition, they were demanding for the club presidentJosep Maria Bartomeu to resign, having supposedly been the guilty party for the saga.

He was strongly linked to moving to the newly-promoted MLS side Inter Miami via Manchester City. However, eventually, the forward announced that he would stay at Barcelona until June 2021.
