In yet another shocking turn of events, it seems like Lionel Messi won’t be able to stay inBarcelona. The club alleges that La Liga’s regulations won’t make it possible for him to sign another contract.
This comes just a couple of weeks after Number 10 and the team had agreed on terms on a new deal, and one season after their infamous breakup and Messi’s tell-all interview calling out Josep Maria Bartomeu.
The Argentina international will now leave the club for free and it certainly won’t be long before he finds a new destination. Obviously, the news was all over the internet in the blink of an eye and everybody had a lot to say about it.
FC Barcelona’s Statement On Lionel Messi
(Transcript via Barcelona)
“Despite FC Barcelona and Lionel Messi having reached an agreement and the clear intention of both parties to sign a new contract today, this cannot happen because of financial and structural obstacles (Spanish Liga regulations).
“As a result of this situation, Messi shall not be staying on at FC Barcelona. Both parties deeply regret that the wishes of the player and the club will ultimately not be fulfilled.
“FC Barcelona wholeheartedly expresses its gratitude to the player for his contribution to the aggrandisement of the club and wishes him all the very best for the future in his personal and professional life.”

It’s kind of shocking and sad to know that some structural regulations will prevent Messi from retiring with his beloved club. He achieved the ultimate glory with the Catalans and is the greatest player in club history.
Then again, it’s kind of exciting to know that he’ll take his talents somewhere else. Could you imagine him teaming up with Cristiano Ronaldo? Or what about a reunion with Neymar in France? Wherever he ends up, we can’t wait to see how this situation unfolds.
