Argentina and Uruguay face off on Friday afternoon in a high-stakes 2026 World Cup Qualifier, a matchup expected to be filled with intensity, passion, and—hopefully—plenty of goals. However, the biggest talking point ahead of the game is the absence of Lionel Messi. Why is the Argentine captain missing from the squad?

According to TyC Sports journalist Gastón Edul, Messi underwent medical tests following his recent match with Inter Miami in MLS. The results revealed a minor muscle injury, ruling one of the greatest players in soccer history out of Argentina’s upcoming qualifiers.

“Confirmed: Leo Messi will not play for the Argentine national team against Uruguay and Brazil,” Edul reported on his X (formerly Twitter) account. The injury not only sidelines Messi for the Uruguay clash but also for the highly anticipated showdown against Brazil.

More injury concerns for Argentina

Messi is not the only key player unavailable for Lionel Scaloni’s squad. Lautaro Martínez is also sidelined with a muscle injury, while Paulo Dybala and Giovani Lo Celso are out as well. Despite these absences, Scaloni has several options to fill the void and keep Argentina‘s momentum going.

“It’s a shame to miss these two special matches against Uruguay and Brazil with the national team. As always, I wanted to be there, but at the last moment, a minor injury forced me to take a short break before returning to play. I’ll be cheering from here like any other fan. Vamos, Argentina!”

How Argentina has fared without Messi

The last time Argentina played without Messi, they suffered a 2-1 loss to Colombia in September 2024. In that match, Lautaro Martínez, Julián Álvarez, and Nicolás González led the attack.

Despite his absence, Argentina remains at the top of the CONMEBOL standings with 25 points, boasting eight wins, one draw, and three losses. Even without their captain and other key players, Scaloni’s squad will look to extend their lead in the qualifiers and continue their push toward the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
