The 2025 BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells is underway, with the tournament already providing some surprising results, such as Novak Djokovic’s early exit, as well as the defeat of No. 1 seed Alexander Zverev. With the absence of Jannik Sinner, the tournament could be a turning point for some stars in the ATP Rankings.
The first major shock came with Zverev’s loss to Tallon Griekspoor in the second round. It was a significant blow for a player with high aspirations, as the German had the opportunity to close the gap with Sinner, who is serving a three-month ban for his doping case.
Meanwhile, Djokovic, widely regarded as one of the greatest tennis players of all time, was also eliminated early. The 37-year-old Serbian fell to another Dutch player, Botic Van de Zandschulp, who was also responsible for beating Rafael Nadal in the Spaniard’s last career match.
Another top player who was defeated early was Casper Ruud. Naturally, this caused a stir across the circuit. While there is still a long way to go in the tournament, many are already focusing on how these results impact the ATP rankings.

Carlos Alcaraz can climb spots
Zverev, who already struggled in the recent South American tournaments, has lost several points, as he failed to defend his quarterfinals’ points of the past edition. This helps Alcaraz, who is looking for the three-peat at Indian Wells, but who has to defend his points to really count.
