Novak Djokovic extends Grand Slam record with win over Zverev to reach Roland Garros semifinal

At 38, Novak Djokovic continues to prove that age is just a number. The Serbian legend secured his place in yet another Grand Slam semifinal by defeating Alexander Zverev in four sets at the Roland Garros quarterfinals. Up next, he faces World No. 1 Jannik Sinner as he pushes toward a record-extending 25th Major title.

Djokovic endured a tough start against Zverev, dropping the first set 6-4—his only set loss in the tournament so far. However, the 24-time Grand Slam champion turned the tide, winning the next three sets 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 to claim victory.

With this win, Djokovic extended his record for the most Grand Slam semifinal appearances, now standing at 51. The other members of the “Big Three,” Roger Federer (46) and Rafael Nadal (38), round out the top three on the all-time list.

Djokovic explains his drop shot strategy

The windy conditions inside Court Philippe-Chatrier added a unique challenge to the match. Djokovic revealed that he relied heavily on drop shots in the closing stages to adapt to the elements.

“Especially during the last game, my tactic was just to play drop shots,” Djokovic shared. “I played three or four in a row. Maybe you can’t see it on TV, but there’s a lot of wind from one side, so it feels like you must hit twice as hard. It was important to vary the game”.

The Serbian also reflected on his motivation to keep competing at the highest level: “Matches like this tonight are the reason why I still want to play and compete,” Djokovic said. “Evidently there was a lot of pressure at the end. Zverev has been one of the best players in the world over the past six years”.

ATP Ranking boost for Djokovic

With his victory over Zverev, Djokovic is set to reclaim the World No. 5 spot in the ATP rankings, overtaking current holder Jack Draper. If Djokovic defeats Jannik Sinner to advance to the Roland Garros final, he will climb even higher, securing the No. 4 position ahead of Wimbledon.
