Jannik Sinner reaches Grand Slam mark only achieved by Djokovic, Federer and Nadal this century

Jannik Sinner advanced to the semifinals of the French Open and reached a Grand Slam milestone that only Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, and Rafael Nadal have achieved in recent years.

On Wednesday, Jannik Sinner defeated Aleksandr Bublik 6-1, 7-5, 6-0 in the quarterfinals of Roland Garros, securing his spot among the final four of the tournament. While he awaits to find out whether his next opponent will be Alexander Zverev or Novak Djokovic, the World No. 1 reached a benchmark that only the Serbian star, Roger Federer, and Rafael Nadal had previously matched in recent years.

The win over Bublik marked Sinner’s 19th consecutive Grand Slam victory. That number includes the five matches he has won so far at Roland Garros, in addition to his successful runs at the last two major tournaments he participated in.

Jannik’s last tournament before serving a three-month suspension for a positive doping test was the Australian Open, where he claimed the title after winning all seven of his matches, including the final against Alexander Zverev. Prior to that, in 2024, he had also won the US Open: there, too, he posted a perfect run with seven victories, including the final against Taylor Fritz.

In the 21st century, only three players have put together a similar streak of wins at Grand Slam events. At the top of the list is Novak Djokovic, who holds the all-time record with 30 consecutive victories between Wimbledon 2015 and 2016—meaning he won all four Grand Slams in a row.

During this edition of Roland Garros, the Italian star has the opportunity—if everything goes perfectly—to win two more matches and become the tournament’s champion. In that scenario, he would surpass the marks of Bjorn Borg and John McEnroe, who share seventh place with 20. Higher up are Pete Sampras, Rafael Nadal, and Jimmy Connors (25), Roger Federer (27), Rod Laver (29), and Novak Djokovic (30).

Sinner reflects on reaching the French Open semifinals

After defeating Aleksandr Bublik in straight sets, Sinner reflected on his performance. “Against this kind of player, you have to be consistent because if you make a lot of mistakes, it is a game where if we both serve very well, there is already not so many rallies. I tried to get rhythm with the rallies,” he said, according to the official ATP Tour website.

Finally, the World No. 1 shared his thoughts on what it means to reach the final four of a major tournament—something he has now accomplished for the sixth time in a row: “I am very happy and happy with how I arrived in the semi-finals. Semi-finals in Grand Slams are very special, so I am looking forward to it.”
