“You never know what can happen with another team’s schedule. They could go on a skid. You don’t want to live with any regrets, so you play your best hockey and let the cards fall where they may. If something happens to another team, you want to be in position to sneak in.“

While fans in Calgary would love nothing more than to sneak into the playoffs and knock the Oilers out in the process, that scenario remains a long shot. A more realistic path sees the Flames overtaking the St. Louis Blues, who also sit at 93 points—just like Edmonton—but have only three games left and a tougher remaining schedule.

The <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/colorado-avalanche">Colorado Avalanche</a> have lost two consecutive games at home, and the alarms are starting to sound off in Denver as the organization hadn’t dropped two games in a row on home-ice since January. After squandering a 2-0 lead against the Calgary Flames, NHL veteran Brock Nelson dropped a strong message for Nathan MacKinnon and the rest of the locker room to listen to.



Though the term “crisis” would be too extreme, it’s undeniable the Avs are going through a rough stretch during the 2024-25 <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nhl">NHL</a> campaign, on the eve of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.



<a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/nathan-mackinnon">MacKinnon</a> kept his home point streak alive by assisting Cale Makar on a highlight-reel goal to open the scoring. With the assist, ‘Nate Dogg’ extended his streak to 25 consecutive home games with at least one point. The last time he was kept scoreless at Ball Arena was on December 1, during a 4-1 defeat to the Edmonton Oilers.



However, it wasn’t enough for the Avalanche to prevail over the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/calgary-flames">Flames</a>. Calgary is battling for its life, in hopes of snatching a playoff berth on the dying seconds of the regular season.

Following the 3-2 shootout loss, Nelson issued a bold reminder to MacKinnon and the Avs, as they dropped consecutive games for the first time since Feb. 22-23.

“Can’t have that now, especially this time of year. We’d been in control most of the game. So, we know we’re capable of closing out, too, with the way we can play. So, it’s just about energy, focus.”



<h2>Curious penalty shot takers</h2>



The Avalanche have a star-studded lineup, with almost every player being capable of burying their shootout attempts. However, the designated shooters against Calgary felt a bit odd. Neither MacKinnon, Makar, or Martin Necas took a shot on Flames’ Dan Vladar.

Instead, Ross Colton, Charlie Coyle, and Valeri Nichushkin were the penalty shot takers, with all three of them missing their attempts. According to DNVR Avalanche on X, Bednar explained his shootout lineup based on analytics. 



However, fans aren’t so appreciative of big data, especially when it means MacKinnon and Makar are kept on the bench during the biggest moment of the game. Others believe it was Bednar’s way of letting MacKinnon and Necas know he wasn’t pleased with their performance.

<a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/philadelphia-flyers">Philadelphia Flyers</a> wants to get out of the bottom of the table in the Metropolitan Division and set to work to improve its offensive side. Coach John Tortorella will have a new key weapon for the remainder of the 2024-25 <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nhl">NHL</a> season with the goal of scoring points, after a trade with the Calgary Flames.



Philadelphia suffered a heavy 3-0 defeat at the hands of the New York Islanders on Thursday without 14-goal forward Owen Tippett. His absence was due to a hit he suffered in Wednesday’s game against the New Jersey Devils in another crushing 5-0 loss for Tortorella’s team.



Given the context, and with one of the team’s top players off the field, it was necessary to make a quick and effective move to bring in a new face, so the Flyers contacted the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/calgary-flames">Flames</a> to arrange a beneficial trade.



<h2>Key weapon to join Tortorella’s Flyers</h2>



John Tortorella’s Flyers acquired left wing Andrei Kuzmenko from the Flames in a trade that also included the addition of forward Jakob Pelletier, a second-round pick in the 2025 NHL Draft and a seventh-round pick in the 2028 NHL Draft for Philadelphia.

Calgary, meanwhile, gets forwards Morgan Frost (11 goals and 14 assists) and Joel Farabee (8 goals and 11 assists), both of whom were regulars for the Flyers. It’s clear that Philadelphia was looking to retool its forward line. “It all came together pretty quickly,” said Flames general manager Craig Conroy.

<h2>Andrei Kuzmenko’s performance in the 2024-25 NHL season</h2>



Kuzmenko has 15 points on four goals and 11 assists in 37 games this season. The 28-year-old forward is in the final season of a two-year, $11 million contract signed in January 2023 and can become an unrestricted free agent in July.



<h2>Matvei Michkov reunites with former teammate</h2>



Kuzmenko will be reunited on the Flyers with his former teammate, star Matvei Michkov. The two forwards played together in the KHL with SKA St. Petersburg during the 2021-22 season. <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/calgary-flames">Calgary Flames</a>‘ young goaltender Dustin Wolf has demonstrated great potential in the NHL. In a recent game against the Nashville Predators, Wolf achieved a major milestone by securing his first career shutout in the league.



Wolf faced a tough challenge against Juuse Saros, one of the NHL’s premier goaltenders. Rising to the occasion, the young netminder stopped all 29 shots he faced, delivering an outstanding performance.



“Feels good, monkey’s off the back now,” Wolf said via the Flames’ social media account. “It felt good to get it done… the team stuck with it. I’m just glad we got the win.”



<h2>Wolf’s respect for the Predators’ goaltender</h2>



Wolf also expressed admiration for his counterpart, Juuse Saros, whose stature and style are similar to his own. “He’s a heck of a goaltender over there. He’s been a fun guy to watch over the last few years. Obviously, I’m still going to keep a pretty close eye on him. He’s certainly one of the best in the league, and there are definitely things I can continue to take from him,” Wolf said.

The Calgary Flames have gotten off to a hot start to the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nhl">NHL</a> season and sit atop the Pacific Division with a perfect record through their first four games. After defeating the Chicaco Blackhawks 3-1, the Flames goalie Dustin Wolf made something clear on facing the Hawks young superstar Connor Bedard. 



<a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/calgary-flames">Calgary</a> is eager for postseason success. The team has failed to make the Stanley Cup Playoffs for consecutive years and has not reached the Conference Finals since the 2003-04 season, when they fell to Tampa Bay in the Final. The franchise has been in decline since trading away Matthew Tkachuk, replacing him with Jonathan Huberdeau and MacKenzie Weegar. However, there are winds of change being felt in Alberta this year.



The strong start to this season, though it’s extremely early to tell, may be a sign of what’s to come for the Flames. On Tuesday night, they took down <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/chicago-blackhawks">Chicago</a> and the team’s goalie Dustin Wolf couldn’t hide his excitement after a great performance against standout Bedard.



“I think there’s extra motivation when you see a guy like Bedard over there who’s the next big thing,” Wolf said, per Sportsnet. “It’s rewarding to go out there and shut him down. The objective is to go out there and stop as many shots as you can. It doesn’t matter who is shooting them. But it’s certainly pretty cool when you can put a zero up for that guy. You know he’s going to score a heck of a lot of goals in this league.”

Wolf stopped 31 of 32 shots, with seven of those saves coming against Connor Bedard. Although he is only in his sophomore NHL season, the Blackhawks forward is already a force to be reckoned with in the league. The Calder Trophy winner has confirmed that the buzz around him is deserved, and he has transitioned to the highest level with no signs of regression.

<h2>Bedard sets himself and Blackhawks to high-standard</h2>



The Chicago Blackhawks organization is currently in the early stages of a rebuild. Following their success in the 2010s, the Hawks have closed down the curtain on those glory days and are now looking to start from scratch after years of lingering in No Man’s Land. 



Chicago is confident Bedard will be the franchise’s cornerstone and fans in Windy City are thrilled to have him in for the long ride. However, the talented 19-year old is not settling for mediocrity and is already a leader in a team filled with veterans.



“In the end, it’s about how many games you win, and only getting one is not great,” Connor Bedard said. “You can take positives from what we did. We had a chance in every game, which is great, but in the end it doesn’t really matter. It’s about the two points.”



Through the first four games of the season, Bedard has tallied one goal, four assissts (leads the team), and +/- 2. During his rookie year, Bedard finished with 61 points (22 goals and 39 assists) through 68 games.
