In a crucial matchup for the NHL playoffs, the Vancouver Canucks showcased formidable resilience, edging out the Calgary Flames 4-3 in a thrilling shootout. The victory, sealed by a decisive goal from Conor Garland, marked the triumphant return of captain Quinn Hughes, who, after a four-game absence, played a pivotal role with an assist and nearly 30 minutes of ice time.
The win was not only vital for the standings but also provided a significant morale boost for a team that had lost four of its last six games. The Canucks’ determination was evident as they rallied from a deficit to force overtime and ultimately secure the victory.
The night was an emotional rollercoaster, with both teams battling fiercely for every inch of ice. Elias Pettersson, with a goal and an assist, was another key player for Vancouver, tying the game in the third period and demonstrating his ability to shine in critical moments. Goaltender Kevin Lankinen also delivered a standout performance, making 20 saves and stopping a crucial attempt in the shootout.
For the Flames, the loss was a tough blow, despite earning a point in the standings. Jonathan Huberdeau scored two goals, and Nazem Kadri contributed a goal and an assist, but it wasn’t enough to secure the win. The frustration was palpable, especially after losing a lead in the third period.
Hughes makes impactful return
“I haven’t really felt great over the past month, but I’m really thankful for the medical group we have,” Hughes said, per NHL.com. “I’m sure they’re sick and tired of me, but it’s really fun to get back. As the next couple of games come, I’ll start to get my legs, conditioning, and hands back to where I was before I left.”

Hughes, who logged nearly 30 minutes in his return, showcased his importance to the team, both offensively and defensively. His presence on the ice was a determining factor in the Canucks’ victory.
“Obviously a really important game,” Hughes added. “A very excited group. Individually, really fun to get back into the swing of things and feel confident in my body. A big win tonight. Really excited for our team. We’ve just got to keep climbing.”
Pettersson steps up in crucial moments
Elias Pettersson, for his part, demonstrated his ability to rise to the occasion. “He’s an excellent, excellent player,” Hughes said. “You don’t get to where he’s at as a player and person without being competitive and having inner drive. It’s been a tough go for him this year, but for him to show up the way he has the last couple of games, that’s big-time. We’re going to continue to need him to do it.”
