Throughout the course of their history, the Duke Blue Devils have had their fair share of superstars. They’ve had some of the best players to ever lace them up in <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/college-basketball" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">college basketball</a>.



That’s why it wasn’t much of a surprise to see them land <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/cooper-flagg" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cooper Flagg</a>, who had been penciled in as the best recruit in his class long before he was even old enough to go to prom.



That sentiment hasn’t changed during his first — and most likely only — season in college. If anything, he continues to be the leading candidate to win the prestigious John R. Wooden Award, which is given to the best player in the nation.

“Duke’s Cooper Flagg continues to be the odds-on-favorite to win the John R. Wooden Award this season with Auburn’s Johni Broome right behind him but it appears to be a two-man race at this point with Purdue’s Braden Smith, Alabama’s Mark Sears. Creighton’s Ryan Kalkbrenner and Memphis’ PJ Haggerty trailing,” reported Arash Markazi of The Sporting Tribune.

The Blue Devils star is also the odds-on favorite to be the first-overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, and that has been the case long before he made his debut at Duke.

So far, the Montverde Academy product has posted impressive averages of 19.5 points, 7.7 rebounds, and 4.0 assists per game on almost 48% from the floor, and he’s leading his team in all major stats.

Long before he announced his commitment to play for the Duke Blue Devils, <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/cooper-flagg" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cooper Flagg </a>was already the most talked-about player in the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/college-basketball" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">college basketball</a> scene.



That hasn’t changed during his first — and most likely only — season at Durham. However, as good as he’s been, he struggled mightily in the loss to the Clemson Tigers.



Flagg finished the game with 18 points on 35% from the floor, and he had a crucial turnover down the stretch. When asked the secret to stop him, however, coach Brad Brownell admitted that they didn’t do anything.

“We didn’t do anything nobody else hasn’t done before,” Brownell told ESPN after the win. “The second half,” the coach continued, “that’s about as good as we can play.”

Sometimes, there’s no right answer. You can have a perfect game and still struggle to contain a player of Flagg’s talent, and that’s what sets him apart from other players.

Flagg was held to six points for most of the game, but he finished the matchup with 18 points on 35% shooting. That was far from his usual efficiency, which is close to 48% from the floor.

Even so, all players are entitled to a bad game. If anything, it’ll be interesting to see how he manages to bounce back from this and show his resiliency and mental toughness.

Duke Blue Devils star <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/cooper-flagg" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cooper Flagg</a>, who’s expected to be the first-overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, looked like a big-enough prize to make things give up on contending for a whole year.



That’s why Toronto Raptors analyst Christopher Kline couldn’t fathom why the team would trade for Brandon Ingram. While he might help them win some games, it could cost them their future superstar.

“As for the Raptors, this trade comes at an awkward moment. Toronto is 16-35 with its sights set, presumably, on Cooper Flagg,” Kline wrote. “It’s not often that a team so blatantly engaged in a rebuild trades for an All-Star in his prime. Ingram should have a long window next to Scottie Barnes. He’s 27, with an appealingly modern skill set. But, it’s strange timing. The Raptors are stuck with a cumbersome cap sheet and not much top-end talent. Ingram makes them better for now, but it’s up for debate how much he moves the needle.”

The Raptors are now entering dangerous territory. You never want to be stuck in the middle in pro sports, as they won’t be bad enough to get a top draft pick, nor good enough to be a legitimate contender.

Then again, anything can happen, and we’ve seen teams win the NBA Draft lottery despite not having odds on their side. Still, Raptors fans might not be thrilled with this move.

The Blue Devils dominated their hated rivals with an 87-70 win at Cameron Indoor Stadium. However, the game was never close, and it was way more lopsided than the final score.



That’s why Flagg couldn’t be more satisfied with his team’s effort in the win. When asked about the keys behind their success, he talked about his team’s ability to make the most of their length to make deflections.

“I thought our length kind of discouraged them, throwing a bunch of passes, getting a lot of deflections,” said Flagg. “I think we had the most deflections we’ve had all season, so that was huge for us.”

The Blue Devils jumped to a 40-13 lead in the first half, and the lead was as big as 32 at some point in the second half. They finished the game with ten steals and scored 19 points off 14 UNC turnovers.

However, as impressive as he was on offense, his defense turned even more heads. With Jon Scheyer going from man-to-man to zone, a first in Flagg’s career, he still dominated and even had a couple of blocks.



That’s why Wake Forest coach Steve Forbes had no choice but to tip his hat to Flagg, who, on top of playing lockdown defense, scored three times in a row against a helpless Demon Deacons’ defense.

“Generational,” Forbes said of Flagg. “I’ll give you an example – their leading scorer last year was the first pick in the second round. This guy will be the first pick in the first round. Big difference.“

Flagg was mostly quiet for the first half before absolutely taking over in the final segment of the game. And while he’s already admitted that coach Jon Scheyer called him soft, he hadn’t dug deep into those remarks.



Now, the projected first-overall pick in the upcoming edition of the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nba" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NBA</a> Draft has admitted that that’s been an issue for him. That’s why he knows he needs to be more aggressive. 



<h2>Cooper Flagg says he needs to toughen up</h2>



“It’s not a choice anymore; I have to be aggressive,” Flagg said. “What coach has told me, is that’s going to create for everyone else. In the first half, I felt that a little more — just being passive and playing soft. I can’t create for anyone else that way. I can’t get anyone else open if I’m playing soft. For me, it’s no longer a choice of whether I want to be aggressive or not. I have to be aggressive at all times.”

Even so, as harsh as his coach was, it’s not like he didn’t know he could take it. If anything, Coach Scheyer gives him credit for being able to bounce back and dominate:



“In that timeout, I challenged him because his game is not just about scoring but his game is about impacting winning in every facet. He knew it. Credit him for responding,” Scheyer said.

Flagg’s relentless approach and determination to get better might be just what sets him apart from the rest of the pack when NBA teams are on the clock in the Draft.

That’s why coach Jon Scheyer couldn’t stand to watch him being so passive in the win against NC State. He finished the first half with just five points, so his coach pulled him aside and gave him some tough love.

Clearly, his coach’s harsh and brutally honest words had a big effect on him. He took over the game with 23 second-half points, adding five rebounds, two assists, and a huge block.

With that in mind, the legendary coach Mike Krzyzewski shared his thoughts on the hype surrounding their two latest superstars: Zion Williamson and <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/cooper-flagg" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cooper Flagg.</a>

<blockquote class="wp-block-quote">“[Cooper Flagg] has been amazing, really. There’s not even a glimpse of anything negative,” Coach K said. “There’s no negative DNA in his room. He came in with hype, not as much as Zion because Zion’s was his like you couldn’t believe that body type could do all that.”</blockquote>

Unfortunately, Williamson hasn’t been able to find that same success in the league. While spectacular when he plays, he’s been hurt more often than not so far.

There have also been some major concerns about his work ethic, eating habits, and overall feel for the game. Hopefully, that won’t be the case with Flagg, who has everything to be a star.

The Maine native has been fairly impressive in his first — and most likely only — season at Durham. He’s currently leading the Blue Devils in all five major categories.



Nonetheless, even though he seems to be a lock to be the next American star in the Association, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver would rather pull the brakes on the hype.

The Commissioner then talked about the importance of getting more American talents to the league and getting to work closely with national player development programs:



<blockquote class="wp-block-quote">“I will just add that while it’s amazing to see the breadth and depth of international players coming into the NBA, 70% of our players in the NBA are still U.S. players,” Silver continued. “Could we do a better job working potentially with other youth programs in the U.S. developing U.S. players? At the end of the day, there’s never any kind of certainty when it comes to the NBA Draft. But, from a potential standpoint, Flagg does have everything one would look for in a franchise player.

Fast forward to today, and there are even more reasons to jump on board the bandwagon. He’s not going to be on campus for much longer, but he’s definitely making the most of his time there.



The future <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nba" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NBA </a>star has been one of the most versatile and well-rounded players in the nation this season. In fact, he could break a 25-year record mark in the ACC.



<h2>Cooper Flagg is leading Duke in five major categories</h2>



As pointed out by Steve Wiseman of The News &amp; Observer, Flagg is the first player in the past 25 years to lead his team in points, rebounds, assists, steals, and blocks per game:

As of now, the 6-foot-9 small forward is averaging 19.2 points, 8.1 rebounds, 4.1 assists, 1.6 steals, and 1.2 blocks per contest for Jon Scheyer’s team, and that kind of versatility and ability to fill up the stat sheet will make him the No. 1 pick in the NBA Draft.

The Duke Blue Devils are just like every other white-collar college basketball program. You either love them or you hate them; there’s simply no in-between at this point.



What no one can deny, however, is that they’re always expected to compete for the ultimate prize. And now that they have <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/cooper-flagg" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cooper Flagg</a>, that has only become more evident.



They’ve fared quite well so far, going 15-2 overall and 7-0 in the ACC. Nonetheless, Jay Jack still doesn’t see them being ready to win the whole thing this season. 



<h2>Jack Jay doesn’t think Duke will win the title</h2>



<blockquote class="wp-block-quote">“I think only time can tell, I would be willing to say they’ll be in final four.” Jay said on ‘To The Baha.’ “They just have so much talent, they’ve got a big (at every single position), they’ve got Cooper, they’ve got point guard play, they’ve got shooters.”</blockquote>

Jay did admit that the Blue Devils are as talented as any team can hope to be. Nevertheless, they’re also very young, and he knows they’ll be under a lot of pressure:



<blockquote class="wp-block-quote">“They have got everything you need to make a long run, time will tell with the freshmen when it comes to the tournament, like how they really deal with that talent-wise, there’s not many teams as talent as this Duke team,” he continued.</blockquote>

Just like he said, only time will tell whether Jon Scheyer’s team will be able to get the job done. For the time being, it’s almost impossible not to consider them a legitimate contender.

His 42 points against Notre Dame marked a new record for any ACC player.



Nonetheless, it didn’t come without a price. He went to the line 17 times, knocking down 16 free throws. He didn’t shy away from contact, but the Fighting Irish kept being overly physical with him.



That’s why coach Jon Scheyer lost his temper. The officials called Flagg for an offensive foul for seemingly pushing off on a drive. He had clearly been held first, so Scheyer emphatically went after the officials, being called for a technical foul. Even so, he has no regrets. 



<h2>Jon Scheyer won’t stop defending Cooper Flagg</h2>



<blockquote class="wp-block-quote">“People are going to do things to try to make it easier to guard him,” Scheyer said. “And grabbing and holding is going to be something that’s there. So it wasn’t just one play isolated for me. It’s just understanding that he does get hit.”</blockquote>

Scheyer doubled down on his determination to defend Flagg when he’s getting hit. Then again, he also made it loud and clear that he had no ill feelings towards the referees:

The Duke star has already written his name in history books. His 42-performance helped the Blue Devils take down the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in a close, 86-78 game.



Not only was this a career-best for the projected first-overall pick of the 2025 NBA Draft, but it also was the highest single-game scoring performance in Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) history. However, he wasn’t even aware of what he had done.

Flagg put together a tent and camped at the free-throw line all game long. He went 16-of-17 from the charity stripe, and he headlined the importance of drawing contact:

Of course, some argue that Dylan Harper or Ace Bailey have already piled up enough merits to take him down as the first-overall pick. Most insiders, however, still have him atop their rankings.



Notably, that includes ESPN expert Seth Greenberg. Talking on SportsCenter, the renowned analyst explained what sets Cooper Flagg apart from other players with ‘flashier’ games.
