NCAAB News: Geno Auriemma made telling comment about his future

Geno Auriemma has been in charge of the UConn Huskies for four full decades. He’s led the team to the National Championship 12 times, including his latest rip just three weeks ago.

Given his age, there has always been speculation about whether this could be his final run, and one could argue that there would be no better moment to walk away than as a champion.

However, that’s not on his mind right now. Shortly after winning the title with Paige Bueckers at the helm, he made it loud and clear that he’s not calling it quits anytime soon.

Geno Auriemma isn’t going anywhere

“Who knows when that morning I wake up and I just say, ‘Listen, I can’t do it anymore,’” Auriemma said. “But I don’t see that being tomorrow morning, let’s put it that way.”

Despite being a seasoned veteran and not having anything else to accomplish or prove at this point, Coach Auriemma seems to think that age is just a number for him:

“I think when you have the kind of work experience that I have, every day I’m surrounded by people who are alive, they’re young, they’re moving, they’re growing, and you get swept up in all that,” Auriemma said. “I’m 71 by numbers, but I don’t know that I feel that because every day I’m surrounded by young people. They can call me ‘Gramps’ or ‘Pops’ or whatever they want to call me, but at the end of the day, I feel like I’m having an impact on them, and they’re having an impact on me.”

At the end of the day, Auriemam is still clearly relevant, and it’s not like his ways have grown outdated. If he wants to say, there’s simply no reason to show him the door.
