Luis Gil’s roster spot shaky as NY Yankees pivot to 4-man rotation lead by Max Fried

Luis Gil’s status for the New York Yankees‘ Opening Day roster remains one of the final question marks of the spring. While manager Aaron Boone has solidified the core of his rotation, Gil’s specific role—or whether he starts the season in the Bronx at all—is still being debated.

With Max Fried slated to lead the charge on Opening Day, followed by Cam Schlittler, Will Warren, and Ryan Weathers, the Yankees are weighing whether to use Gil as a “piggyback” long-relief option.

The decision likely hinges on roster math; as noted by Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News, the Yankees might prefer the flexibility of an extra traditional reliever, making a Triple-A assignment for Gil the most probable outcome.

Spring performance and velocity surge

While six players have been in the mix for the final spots, Gil’s late-spring surge has made the decision difficult for Boone in the rotation.

Gil’s velocity was uncharacteristically low, sitting between 91–93 mph with inconsistent command. He flipped the script in his final spring start against the Orioles last Friday, touching 96–97 mph and debuting a heavy sinker that stifled hitters.

That uptick in power gives him a distinct edge over Schlittler or Weathers, both of whom have struggled to find their rhythm this spring. If the Yankees prioritize “stuff” over service time, Gil has a legitimate case for the flight to New York.

The road ahead

Regardless of the Opening Day decision, Gil’s 2026 debut is a matter of “when,” not “if.” The Yankees face a grueling stretch of 13 games in 13 days starting April 7, a period that almost certainly necessitates a spot-start or a move to a six-man rotation.

For now, Gil is scheduled to throw a live session in Tampa on Wednesday. Unless a late roster move materializes in the coming hours, he is expected to head to Triple-A to stay stretched out and ready for the inevitable call-up.
