In his first stint as head coach of a marquee franchise like the Los Angeles Lakers, JJ Redick is proving he has what it takes to lead at the highest level. While Luka Doncic was still playing for the Dallas Mavericks at the time, a resurfaced clip on social media reveals just how well Redick understood the star guard’s game, even before the possibility of coaching him became real.

Lakers fans were caught off guard by the news of Doncic being traded to Los Angeles. With Anthony Davis departing in the deal, many were stunned—but excitement quickly replaced doubt. One of the NBA’s top talents had arrived in purple and gold, and Doncic has embraced the spotlight from day one.

Long before the trade, Redick had already showcased a deep understanding of Dončić’s unique style. In a rare video clip shared online, Redick broke down what made the Slovenian standout so effective with the Mavericks, and now, by extension, with the Lakers.

“Luka Doncic isn’t a vertical or linear athlete. He has the best deceleration in the world,” Redick explained in a preseason interview. “What he does—constantly changing pace—is designed to get defenders off balance. Once you’re off balance, he’s on balance, and that gives him the advantage.”

Doncic shares high praise for Redick’s coaching

After a standout performance and a strong finish to the season, Luka Doncic didn’t hold back when asked about J.J. Redick’s impact as head coach. The Slovenian star praised Redick’s basketball IQ, his ability to manage players on the court, and the energy he’s brought to elevate the team’s performance.

I’m very impressed,” Doncic told Sportsnet Spectrum. “I knew when I played with him he could maybe be an assistant coach or something. I never expected him to be a head coach. But seeing what he’s done, it’s unbelievable.

Doncic’s influence on the Lakers’ surge

The Lakers finished the regular season with a 50-32 record, including an 18-10 run after Doncic joined the lineup. Though he missed four of the final 32 games due to minor injuries and rest, his presence made a clear difference.

Doncic totaled 778 points across just 28 games, placing him fourth among the league’s top scorers despite limited appearances. He averaged an impressive 28.2 points per game with the Lakers and added 211 assists, third on the team behind LeBron James, who led with 575.
