Quinn Ewers was one of the standout stars in college football last year, earning him the opportunity to declare for the latest NFL Draft. While the Miami Dolphins will now be his destination for the upcoming season, the quarterback admitted he expected to be selected much earlier.
Selected in the seventh round with the 231st overall pick, Ewers ended up being the last quarterback taken in the draft. While he expressed satisfaction at achieving his goal of making it to the league, the signal-caller admitted he was puzzled by how far he fell.
“I just didn’t know what was going on,” Ewers said in a recent interview with ESPN’s Todd Archer. “It was very unexpected, and I think that the toughest part about it is just the amount of unexpected occurrences there were. But I’m glad that I ended up where I ended up. To go as late as I did, I’m glad it’s a good spot.”
Despite the surprising outcome, the former Texas Longhorns player added that he feels highly motivated by the opportunity ahead and is determined to make the most of it.
“It’s definitely a lot of motivation that comes with it, especially just being the last [quarterback] drafted,” Ewers also added. “I still have high expectations for myself, but just from the outside looking in, this is the first time in my life to not have that much expectation. There’s definitely motivation and fuel. A lot of it.”
A key backup for Tua
There’s no doubt that the star of Mike McDaniel’s roster is Tua Tagovailoa, the quarterback who continues to carry the full weight of the franchise’s trust as he looks to once again lead the Dolphins and keep them in contention in the AFC East.
Even so, given Tua’s concerning injury history—particularly the serious concussions he suffered last season—the Dolphins’ front office isn’t leaving anything to chance. The selection of Quinn Ewers clearly comes with purpose.
Both the former Longhorn and Zach Wilson will need to be ready at a moment’s notice in case of any unforeseen events. The coaching staff trusts in their talent to rise to the occasion if called upon.
Ewers’ message to those who didn’t draft him
Ewers was the last quarterback selected in the latest NFL draft, meaning many teams in need of strengthening the position overlooked the former Texas star. Far from being discouraged, the QB sent a message looking ahead to what’s next: “The Raiders took two FCS guys above me, so …. We’ll see what happens.”
