The Minnesota Vikings are facing a tough offseason as they lose two key quarterbacks for the 2025 NFL season. After losing Sam Darnold to the Seattle Seahawks, head coach Kevin O’Connell has seen Daniel Jones leave for an opportunity with an AFC team.
Losing Darnold was a big blow for the Vikings, as he was the starting quarterback in the 2024 NFL season, in which Minnesota had an outstanding regular season. The 27-year-old quarterback signed a three-year, $55 million guaranteed contract with the Seahawks, who saw an opportunity after parting ways with Geno Smith. Against that backdrop, O’Connell’s team faces another departure.
Jones came to the Vikings just a few months ago when he joined Minnesota’s practice squad in November 2024 after being released by the New York Giants and going through the waiver process. He was promoted to the Vikings‘ active roster in January, but now the 27-year-old quarterback has decided to change cities again.
Where will Daniel Jones play?
The new team that quarterback Daniel Jones will join in the 2025 NFL season is the Indianapolis Colts, as reported by insider Ian Rapoport on his X account (formerly Twitter). At the same time, journalist Tom Pelissero contributed that the deal is a one-year contract and the parties are finalizing the details.
Hectic months for Jones’ career
The Colts will be the third team in the last six months of Jones’ career. Before coming to Minnesota, Danny Dimes left the Giants, ending his six-year tenure with the New York team. It was a somewhat dramatic departure, considering the new Colts player had requested his release after head coach Brian Daboll replaced him with Tommy DeVito following poor performances.
With the Vikings, he shared a team for a few days with Darnold, who will also be moving on next season to play for his fifth franchise in eight seasons as an NFL pro. Both players are looking for stability in their careers, something Jones was apparently unable to find in Minnesota.
Jones comes to Colts to fight for starting quarterback role
Daniel Jones will have a big challenge when he arrives in Indianapolis for the 2025 NFL season. He will be competing for the starting quarterback job alongside one of the biggest upstarts, Anthony Richardson. The 22-year-old player will be in his third season with the Colts and is coming off a season in which he passed for 1814 yards and eight touchdowns.
