As preparations for a new NFL season get underway, the Kansas City Chiefs‘ environment has been somewhat shaken by an off-field incident involving Rashee Rice. Andy Reid, the franchise’s longtime head coach, has revealed the initial steps the team will take with the WR during this critical phase of the offseason.
After being involved in a car crash last year—and later found guilty and sentenced to 30 days in jail—there was plenty of speculation surrounding Rice’s future with the Chiefs and what the franchise would decide moving forward.
Reid—arguably one of the most authoritative voices within the organization—addressed the situation, stating that, for now, he expects to have the wide receiver available heading into minicamp.
“We’re going to progress as normal with him,“ the HC said, via the Associated Press. “He’ll go in and take all the reps that he’ll normally take. We always rotate that position. Depending on what happens here with the future—whoever needs to play will step in and know what they are doing and be in good shape to do it.”
The comeback after injury
While Rice’s legal situation may cast some doubt over his near-term future with the Kansas City Chiefs, another key detail that can’t be overlooked is that his return to the field could come after recovering from a serious injury suffered some time ago.
The exceptional talent out of SMU missed a significant portion of last NFL season after suffering an LCL injury in his right knee. Reid, for his part, intends to closely monitor the situation now that the player is available once again.
“We’ll keep an eye on [the injury],“ Reid said. “As far as pulling back because of suspensions or whatever, you know, we’re going forward. And then we’ll monitor him as far as [the injury] goes.”
A key weapon for Mahomes
Rashee Rice quickly emerged as a crucial target for Patrick Mahomes. His ability to consistently gain separation and secure catches, particularly over the middle and after contact, made him a reliable option in the Chiefs’ passing game, filling a significant need in the receiver corps.
This connection proved vital in their championship season. Rice’s strong rookie campaign culminated in key performances during the playoffs, including in the Super Bowl LVIII where his contributions helped the Chiefs secure another Lombardi Trophy. His presence on the field allowed the QB to distribute the ball effectively, adding another dynamic playmaker to an already potent offense.
