The Pittsburgh Steelers continue to make moves in the offseason with the goal of improving their offense and returning to the playoffs. Amid negotiations with quarterback Aaron Rodgers to join the franchise for the 2025 NFL season, Mike Tomlin‘s team has lost an explosive former All-Pro wide receiver.
It’s true that the Steelers faced issues in the receiver sector during the past season. In addition to the limited options in the position, the signing of Mike Williams from the New York Jets didn’t go as expected, and after his move to the Los Angeles Chargers, changes in the area continue to unfold.
A few days ago, the signing of DK Metcalf from the Seattle Seahawks was confirmed in a trade that included draft picks. The 27-year-old receiver signed a five-year, $132 million contract with the Steelers. Now, in an effort to continue refining their offense, Pittsburgh has said goodbye to a player who hasn’t been able to establish himself or get minutes on the team, far from being a potential key weapon for Rodgers in the upcoming season, should his arrival ultimately be confirmed.
Which receiver will leave the Steelers?
The wide receiver leaving the Steelers is none other than Jamal Agnew, who joins the Atlanta Falcons on a one-year contract worth up to $2.5 million. Agnew became a free agent a week after the end of last season.
Agnew, who was unable to become a player considered by Tomlin to step onto the field, is expected to find a place with the Falcons. He didn’t play any games last season with the Steelers and spent the entire year on the practice squad. Interestingly, he was only promoted for the most important game of the season when Pittsburgh faced the Baltimore Ravens in the playoffs.
Agnew will look to revive his career
Agnew has enough credentials to make a name for himself in the league. The 29-year-old wide receiver was named All-Pro in 2017 and made the Pro Bowl in 2022. His limited presence with the Steelers was due to his recent recovery from a leg fracture at the end of the 2023 season, when he played for the Jacksonville Jaguars. While in Pittsburgh, Agnew was medically cleared after the start of the 2024 season, but he couldn’t return in form.
