The 2025 NFL season may be months away from us, but the rumor mill is in full swing. Aaron Rodgers and Russell Wilson, two of the greatest quarterbacks in the league, are drawing plenty of attention as their futures remain uncertain.

Since we’re talking about two veteran stars who know what is like to win a Super Bowl, it makes sense that their names make headlines during the offseason. What’s even more interesting is that Rodgers and Wilson might be competing for a starting job in the 2025 NFL season.

A-Rod is looking for a new team as the New York Jets already announced their decision to move on from the 4x NFL MVP, whereas Wilson is entering free agency after spending 2024 with the Pittsburgh Steelers on a one-year deal.

The New York Giants have emerged as a potential landing spot for both stars. Even though Rodgers has been heavily linked to the NFC East team, Connor Hughes of SNY reports that Wilson is seen as a strong candidate to gain the upper hand.

Aaron Rodgers #8 of the New York Jets looks on before the game against the Los Angeles Chargers at MetLife Stadium on November 06, 2023 in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

Rodgers, at this point in time, is simply one of many veteran quarterbacks the Giants are considering. We’ll see if that changes in the coming weeks. Russell Wilson (Steelers) is also someone whom the Giants have discussed. One league source believed him to be the player the Giants ultimately land,” Hughes wrote, via Giants Wire. “As is Sam Darnold, per sources. Darnold would be an interesting one because he, unlike Wilson, would likely alter the draft plans at No. 3.

Rodgers’ options for 2025 NFL season

Rodgers, who turns 42 in December, faces an intriguing offseason. The Jets have given up on him after only two years, and not many teams may offer the star QB a serious chance to contend.

The Los Angeles Rams were seen as a great fit for Rodgers in the event Matthew Stafford packed his bags, but that option is no longer on the table as Stafford is staying in LA.

The Steelers have been mentioned as a possible destination for Rodgers as the continuity of Wilson and Justin Field looks up in the air. This also means Russ could be headed to another team in 2025.

Wilson might find new home in NY, but depends on Giants’ approach

Even though Mike Tomlin preferred Wilson over Fields throughout the 2024 NFL season, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN reports that the latter “has an edge” to return to Pittsburgh next year.

The Giants, meanwhile, have a big decision to make at quarterback. The team will have a chance to build around a young prospect as it holds the third overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, unless it prefers to lean on an experienced quarterback in the open market.

Rodgers and Wilson have a proven track record of success that includes Super Bowl victories, and both of them are available this offseason. Darnold may not have the same résumé but is a younger quarterback who comes from a fantastic season with the Minnesota Vikings. Only time will tell how everything plays out.
