TJ Watt has played eight seasons for Mike Tomlin and the Pittsburgh Steelers. In none of them has the team won a playoff game. During an interview with Graham Bensinger, the star defensive player admitted that this is unacceptable for such a historic franchise.
“Winning a Super Bowl is no doubt motivating me. Winning a playoff game is absolutely motivating me. It’s something that we haven’t been able to do since I’ve been there. I think that’s absolutely unacceptable. That is what’s attached to my name right now and I have to answer for that.”
Despite the fact that Watt is one of the best players in the NFL, the Steelers haven’t even come close to reaching the Super Bowl. That’s why many believe Mike Tomlin could be on the hot seat if he doesn’t at least win in the postseason with Aaron Rodgers.
Is TJ Watt still with the Pittsburgh Steelers?
Yes. TJ Watt remains with the Steelers. A few weeks ago, the linebacker signed a three-year contract extension, keeping him with the team through the 2028 season.
Watt is currently the highest-paid non-quarterback in NFL history as he will receive $123 million. This spectacular contract includes $108 million fully guaranteed and an average annual salary of $41 million (higher than Myles Garrett with the Browns).
However, despite his individual success, the veteran showed signs of being tired of being associated with years of constant playoff losses for a team accustomed to winning championships.
“It genuinely bothers me because I’m a part of those teams. As much as I’m only one player, you’re putting your hand in the pile too. I feel like I can make a difference enough to help win a playoff game. To have that to your legacy especially when you play for an organization that has six Super Bowls. TJ Watt, yeah, great individual player, but, what’s the team success? That’s what really bothers me.”
