The hockey world is already bracing for 2026, when Connor McDavid, the face of the Edmonton Oilers, could enter free agency—and Auston Matthews’ Toronto Maple Leafs are reportedly among the teams monitoring the situation closely.

McDavid is coming off another dominant campaign. Despite playing only 67 regular-season games, he reached the 100-point mark and topped all skaters with 33 playoff points during the Oilers’ second straight trip to the Stanley Cup Final. His ability to control the game at both ends remains unmatched, making him the centerpiece of early free agency buzz.

Under contract through 2025–26, McDavid is already eligible for an extension, but no decision has been made. As the clock ticks, contenders across the league—especially Toronto—are watching closely.

Could the Maple Leafs make a play for McDavid?

According to NHL insiderChris Johnston, Toronto could be a serious contender for McDavid if he chooses to test free agency in 2026. If (McDavid) becomes a free agent, of course, the Leafs (would try to sign him)they’ve been nuts,” Johnston said on The Steve Dangle Podcast. “Any of the Original Six teams are probably feeling like they could be in that mix if they’re good enough.”

Johnston also emphasized that McDavid will likely dictate the terms of any deal and that financials alone won’t sway him. “You need to have a plan,” Johnston added. “If Connor extends in Edmonton or if he ends up signing a free agent contract in 2026, we all know there’s no negotiation. It’s literally, he’s going to pick his terms. So it’s about everything else around that.”

McDavid focused on competing, not rushing

McDavid himself addressed the topic at the conclusion of the 2024–25 season. While he didn’t rule anything out, he made it clear that he isn’t rushing toward a decision.

“If I feel that there’s a good window to win here over and over again, then signing is no problem,” he said. “I’m not in a rush to make any decision, so I don’t think there needs to be any timeline.”

For the Maple Leafs, the notion of pairing McDavid with Auston Matthews, who is under contract through 2031, would be transformative. Following another early playoff exit, Toronto is searching for a formula that leads to long-term contention—and McDavid could be the ultimate answer, if the opportunity arises.
