Uncertainty has taken over the NHL world in recent weeks regarding the future of one of its biggest stars, Connor McDavid. As dozens of rumors began to circulate about what might happen with the player, it now appears that a deal with the Edmonton Oilers is close to being finalized.
According to a recent report on the 2 Mutts Hockey Podcast, McDavid reportedly has a deal in place with Kris Knoblauch’s team that includes a set term, duration, and financial figure. The extension is expected to be for 2 or 4 years, worth around $17.5 million, and would be signed after August 28.
“We are hearing that the contract extension for Connor McDavid will most likely happen after the Team Canada Orientation Camp which is August 26th to the 28th in Calgary. The plan is to announce the contract extension before the Captain Skates begin & Training Camp starts,” the insiders reported via @2MuttsHockeyPod.
They also added: “We believe it could be a 2 year deal or a 4 year deal as the @EdmontonOilers already know McDavid won’t be signing an 8 year extension this time around. The conversation on AAV has gone from $16M to around $17.5M from what we’ve been told.”
Lastly, it was made clear that the franchise is working against the clock to get a deal done: “The Oilers still have other work to do to make sure this extension happens & those things are being worked on over the next 3-4 weeks as Stan Bowman & Jeff Jackson have a busy August ahead of them.”
Hope rising in Edmonton
Following another deep playoff run, the Edmonton Oilers are entering the new NHL season with a palpable sense of hope and a renewed championship drive. A huge part of that optimism stems from the potential for captain Connor McDavid to sign a contract extension, solidifying his future as the face of the franchise.
While he remains the undisputed leader on the ice, the thought of securing him for years to come has both the front office and the fanbase buzzing. This season is viewed as a crucial one, as it marks a prime opportunity to demonstrate that the Oilers are not just a talented team, but a legitimate Stanley Cup contender poised to win it all with their superstar at the helm.
