With NHL free agency approaching fast, the New York Rangers are reportedly among the top suitors for Vladislav Gavrikov, the Los Angeles Kings defenseman set to hit the open market. Following a disappointing 2024-25 campaign and the recent departure of longtime forward Chris Kreider, the Rangers are actively reshaping their roster in hopes of returning to contention.
Gavrikov is coming off a strong year in Los Angeles, where he recorded 30 points, a +26 rating, and averaged over 23 minutes of ice time across 82 games. The Russian blueliner’s physicality and shutdown ability would address a clear defensive need for the Rangers, who have struggled to regain their dominant form since claiming the Presidents’ Trophy two years ago.

The primary obstacle is financial. Gavrikov is projected byDaily FaceOff to command a seven-year, $53.2 million deal, which would carry a $7.6 million annual cap hit. As of now, the Rangers have just under $12.2 million in cap space with several players hitting free agency on July 1.
Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported that Gavrikov’s list of potential destinations is narrow, but the Rangers are believed to be on it. “Among left shots, Vladislav Gavrikov is not believed to have a long list of places he wants to go if he leaves Los Angeles, which is why so many are pointing to the Rangers,” Friedman said.
To create space, New York may need to explore moving K’Andre Miller, a restricted free agent this offseason. That kind of shake-up might be the key to acquiring Gavrikov without compromising their long-term cap structure. But time is of the essence, with a $5 million signing bonus reportedly due to Gavrikov on July 1, which complicates any potential trade or contract agreement.
